I’m surprised he got elected. My guess the eGOP finally figured out a candidate they backed could not win.

Trump killed the candidacy of the Rino yesterday, Tom Emmer.

“Trump killed the candidacy of the Rino yesterday, Tom Emmer.” Apparently with a little help from Kevin McCarthy! 🤣

What Gaetz reveals in detail is how Kevin McCarthy has been working the conference to undermine any other Speaker candidate so that McCarthy would be renominated as the only possible alternative. The insight and details are really interesting.

So… bottom line: It’s thanks to Kevin McCarthy that we didn’t get saddled with his own clone, Steve Scalise. Thanks to McCarthy we ended up with Mike Johnson. LMAO (or, as Gaetz says, “it’s glorious!”)

Txt a friend in New Orleans this morning asking about him, he said, he doesn’t stand a chance, he’s an honest guy.

“an honest guy.” Now let’s hope and pray he stays that way.

When will Americans who wish well of their country realise that the GOP is as useless and irrelevant as the UK "Conservative" party?

Yup! Uniparty on both sides of the puddle Steg - with Sunak’s expiration date coming up, and K Starmer (sp?) waiting in the wings. A recent Duran dive into the pathetic morass of UK politics by AM - it truly mirrors ours.

I don't think splitting the party is either likely or viable. This is how we've had the same two parties in power for so long: they adapt and shift positions as their constituencies change. Neither the D nor R parties serve the same constituencies as they did 50 (or even 15) years ago. It's long-game tug-of-war, and third parties are only effective as spoilers.

Instead, as so-called RINOs (i.e. corrupt old-guard Rs) are forced to expose themselves and betray their electorate (like, by voting against Mike Johnson) they will continue to be gradually replaced by new "populist" Rs. Big donors will grudgingly follow the crowd: they can fund campaigns they can't buy votes .

All this is predicated on fair-enough elections, though, and a reasonably informed electorate. These are questionable.

I think you're right about a McCarthy Redux. I don't think he'll get back in. This seems to be a death struggle between real Republicans and RINOs.

Nine of the twenty-five Republican lawmakers who voted against Rep. Jim Jordan, a staunch conservative and close ally of former President Donald Trump, decided to throw their support behind Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) for House Speaker.

Is the gap closing? Or are there new hold-outs?

If they're just playing politics, they can probably negotiate some pretty sweet deals from those blocking positions.
