I can't shake this feeling that Western Elites want nuclear war. Sounds crazy but they are psychopaths who will survive it having 20+ year bunkers - paid for by tax payers in politicians case and then not a week goes by news isnt reporting on some billionaires luxury bunker with 100,000lbs of propane buried for infinite power.
Solves lots of "problems" often times created by them and unfixable. From disastrous immigration policies making cities in Europe "no go" zones, to debt death spirals, to West losing position as dictator of the world and many more... They all seem to believe there are too many people on this planet for example. A nuclear war "solves" these issues and they come out of vaults to new "garden of Eden" with thier robots who do the ditch digging unpaid.
War would, at least in their diseased minds, solve many things. For example, it would let Biden do a Zelensky and cancel the elections. However, as the writers above say, these people don't live in reality. If the nukes really start flying, they will be the first to go.
NATO: locked in the nuclear age. The title gives away the fallacious thinking that Luttwak is engaging in. ‘…the alliance is locked in the nuclear age.’ Luttwak is committing a classic blunder: fighting the last war. The Cold War was prosecuted and eventually won by the WW2 generation who on both sides had the sobriety that only those who survive a world war have. Nuclear weapons were new and had just been used to hasten the end of that war. That generation is gone and with it the living memory, broadly shared, of the horror of war. It is now an abstraction that happens to others for most people in Western Civilization. Luttwak and the neocons assume that the old rule, nuclear weapons are too destructive to use, holds in the new world that we find ourselves in. They have abandoned so many of the old rules, such as avoiding war with nuclear powers, that it seems rather strange to cling to this one old rule. They are engaging in wishful thinking, as if war is like ordering A la cart rather than a menu full of surprises that can kill you. Their fatal conceit is that they can control war as a furnace is controlled with a thermostat. Gradually turn up the heat until one is sending F-16s to Ukraine and terrorists to Moscow. Well guess what! It is a hackable/smart thermostat controlled by an arsonist who wants to burn down your house. Probably made in China.
Assuming that one is fighting the last war: how has that worked out before?
The Cold War is long since over and the world has changed. China is the arsenal of autocracy. Are we going through a crash program to emergently rebuild a massive industrial base that will allow us to be the arsenal of democracy? Not a peep about this. A local strip mine will ship the ore to China for processing to recover gold and other metals. There is news about large lithium deposits found in the US. Will that be shipped to China as most rare earths and other minerals are? If we are to rebuild it is from the ground up. How long will that take? This is another aspect of fighting the last war. How is it possible that anyone does not understand that the balance of industrial power has shifted and that this is part of China’s grand strategy? And that they are allowed to execute their grand strategy by the same ruling class that insists that we engage in industrial warfare with Russia?
The Bible says that the love of money is the root of all evil. Perhaps, with humility, I might suggest that a lot of the stupidity that we are seeing in our time is also rooted in the love of money. Keep saying things like ‘Nuclear weapons were only used twice to end the greatest war in history. They have not been used since. Therefore they will not be used again for specially while we aim to dismember Russia’ in order to keep the gravy train going. Evil? Stupid? Perhaps stupidly evil? Or just assuming that the same old assumptions still hold?
Good points, Hal. It's incredible how they are unable to learn. They still think it's 1991 when the US was at the zenith of its powers. All they have to say to the world is "jump" and we'll tremble and ask "How high?" We see this arrogance with Blinken's declaration that Ukraine will be part of NATO. No room for discussion, let alone argument. Deus vult! They have no idea that is will lead to WW3.
I don't see how this makes upcoming US election more important. The war party controls both candidates/parties. Trump has bragged in recent years that he'd told Putin he'd bomb Moscow Square if Putin went into Ukraine, and that no one's been "tougher on Putin" than he has. (Ignoring that he received votes in 2016 by advocating normalization of relations w. Russia). In 2022 he told GOP donors it would be fun to send bombers into Russia but paint China flags on the planes. This assumes Don would have any say at all, which congress made clear in Aug. 2017 that he did not. Congress removed all Russia matters from him and reassigned them to the Senate. Medvedev commented at the time that Trump had been humiliated. Certainly Mitch McConnell and his pals won't allow peace. Most of all, Lindsey Graham won't allow peace. Graham was the one who in Jan 2017 initiated removing Russia matters from Trump, which was approved nearly unanimously by House and Senate in Aug. 2017. Don approved two shipments of lethal weapons to Ukr. to kill Russians, one in Dec. 2017 and another one later, something even Obama wouldn't do. It wasn't widely reported, but in Sept. 2017 Ukr. Pres. Poroshenko spoke at West Point...3/6/2022, “Trump muses on war with Russia and praises Kim Jong Un,“ Washington Post, Josh Dawsey, New Orleans: “The former president spoke to GOP donors [on March 5, 2022] during an 84-minute speech in New Orleans.” “Former president Donald Trump mused Saturday to the GOP’s top donors that the United States should label its F-22 planes with the Chinese flag and “bomb the s–t out of Russia.”...“And then we say, China did it, we didn’t do it, China did it, and then they start fighting with each other and we sit back and watch,” he said, of labeling U.S. military planes with Chinese flags and bombing Russia, which was met with laughter from the crowd of donors."
Agreed. The tragedy of Trump is not what has happened to him, or might yet happen to him; it's the fact that he won't do a damned thing to change things for the better.
We need a law mandating all government officials voting for a war to send a close family member to the front lines of that war, or to go themselves. If the war is THAT important, why not? And war IS THAT IMPORTANT.
And term limits to sanitize the biofilm that, thick and stinking, covers Western halls of power.
He starts out going over nuclear weapons, and reaches the wrong conclusions on Russia Nuclear Doctrine.
And then he posits number of soldiers equals likelihood of success. Basically Ukraine needs more bodies, and only NATO is available, and it will be fine. And no mention of potential casualties, they will just free up Ukrainian to fight Russians.
No mention of:
- Russia’s industrial Advantage in basically everything related. 6 to 1 artillery, ecm, drones, hyper sonic missiles, air defense, missile defense, etc.
And how the Western Military Equipment has proven to be unreliable, cumbersome, over engineered, fragile, heavy, expensive, and is over rated. Asndvus built at a boutique rate. Not to mention how Europe had de-industrialized. They and the US just don’t have the capacity to build military equipment rapidly. For example, the last Bradley was built in 1995. Not to mention how will the huge numbers of Ukrainians needed be trained.
Luttwak is engaging in a great deal of pretending. The Russians have command of the air and have plenty of glide bombs. Will Ukraine ever have meaningful air defense? Will NATO formations have air defense that will prevent acute zircon poisoning? Will the Russians be nice and not drop various types of bombs on large numbers of trainees? Without electricity and no rail how will NATO logistics troops move supplies to the front? Wizardry?
As for generations of good luck with tens of thousands of nuclear weapons was it anything other than good luck? How many close calls were there when a very level headed officer did not push the button because they were pretty sure what they were seeing on their screen was false?
More pretending from Luttwak: This is an entirely new circumstance. War is at Russia’s doorstep and terrorism and sabotage are happening inside the house. Comparing this to the Cold War, a conflict managed by adults many of whom had been in combat, in terms of the thinking about nuclear weapons and their use is fallacious. This is NATO, a former defensive alliance, waging war in order to achieve the destruction and dismemberment of Russia. This makes it existential and therefore if things are pushed too far nuclear weapons come into play. If the Cuban Missile Crisis came down to combat would we pre-empt with nukes to ensure we were not hit by nukes minutes away? How will this evolve? Luttwak is pretending that this is just the same as the Cold War. Ridiculous.
Importantly Luttwak does not explain why. Why must Russia be defeated? For someone who wrote various books about Grand Strategy the why? behind this should be part of the discussion when it comes to sending troops into the fire cauldron that Russia has waiting.
Goofs like Luttwak never seem to ask themselves the question, “and then what?” They all have magical short sighted thinking. Never seem to consider consequences, or simply dismiss them as irrelevant. That is how we wind up in these situations.
They have the power to unleash events but not the power to control them. In my wildest dreams, I imagine someone in the Pentagon saying "Enough is enough!"
‘And then what?’ Someone, somewhere who was far enough away says ‘What was that?’ Or so the old joke goes. One farmer asks another where he would want to be if nuclear war broke out. The second farmer says ‘Far enough away to say ‘What was that?’
I wonder how the Ukrainians feel about the idea of shoring up their numbers by sending all the Ukrainians to the front lines and back filling the support positions with foreigners so that the only soldiers who get slaughtered are Ukrainian?
There is no safe rear areas in Ukraine for foreign troops. The Russians have been very clear on this. And they have the ability to back it up, and NATO does not have the ability to stop hypersonic missiles.
There seems to be this delusion, that having NATO troops in Ukraine will magically scare the Russians into not attacking them due to the possible consequences.
And the reality is Europe does not have the ability to project the needed forces into Ukraine anyway.
Plus Biden’s reelection campaign would take hit if American troops were deployed. Look how long the build up for desert storm was. And that army is gone anyway. The only really me for the U.S. military is act as a tripwire.
For the Russians Ukraine is existential. For the West, Ukraine is not, outside of some rhetoric.
I really abhor violence and believe it only begets more of the same, but I really feel we are at the point when we need to take up arms and run these f***ers out of town (since I'm British my 'arms' would likely be a frying pan).
Ha! I'll accompany you, Amanda, with a placard saying, "Oppression, no thanks!" and a flask of milky tea. Seriously, though, I wonder if even the Brits will revolt at one point. Sunak is terrible but Starmer seems even worse, and God knows what crazies are hiding behind him.
Lol! Yes - although now we are so regulated pretty much anything with a point or blade is monitored so frying pans and broomsticks it shall be if the time comes. At least we know our military is useless though.
The point being the European Union will not allow any official opposition to their positions using economic threats / sanctions/ lawsuits / funding to keep governments in line.
This seems to have happened with Italy and Hungary, and the previous Polish government.
That only works for a while, Ray. I have my doubts whether a right-dominated EU parliament will change much - "right" here in Europe means centre Left. However, there is massive dislike of the megalomanic folks in Brussels that will come out into the open one day.
This Luttwak guy is a nut. After reading the wiki link about this guy, I’ve concluded that he is a credentialed bullshitter. Whoopi di do, he has a phd from the early 70’s. It isn't US citizens that want any such thing (for the most part)! Most of us just want to live peacefully in a free country. We have a rogue government.
Escalation of the Ukrainian war would be madness, yet the potential humiliation the administration would suffer should Ukraine collapse during Biden’s reelection campaign seems to be driving it in that direction. It would be vastly worse than that suffered in the aftermath of the Afghanistan withdrawal. Should have thought of that before making a commitment to defend Ukraine. Biden painted us into a corner with potentially catastrophic consequences.
With our medias / internet giants ability to silence / censor controversies, I wonder if it’s that much of a risk to the Biden Campaign.
My gut feeling it’s more related to hubris, tarring Trump with Russia (incredibly effective), and now trying to blame the gop for Ukraine’s failure with a bit of Neocon thrown in.
Additionally, may be all the Ukraine dirty money windfall, and related evidence that keeps the uniparty going full Ukraine of Slavi Ukraini (Glory to Ukraine).
UK seems to be different reasons. I need to listen to the Duran Sachs interview to grok why.
And the EU seems to find Russia a useful enemy to distract the proles, very 1984, and justify measures to keep the elites in power.
Now, what if Ukraine collapses. There would be a huge amount of refugees, causing more problems in Europe. I don’t see the impact in the U.S. unless a lot of dirt is released and miraculously pierces the media wall of omertà on anything negative to Biden.
Beat me to it, Ray. I wager that most Americans (like many Brits) don't even know where Ukraine is. And as you say, the MSM is still loud and powerful enough to distract the masses. And there's always bird flu! as the next big panic.
I cannot link to it at the moment. But David Goldman add a recent piece in Asia times regarding a working session. He was at off military and postmilitary leaders. It is definitely worth for read. Golden shocked at the seeming willingness. Oh, all involved to go to war. Over Russia.
This was a very interesting read. If what he says about China’s automated factories and use of industrial robots is true then we likely do not know the extent of their manufacturing capacity. He says they claim to be able to make 1000 cruise missiles a day. If they are boasting then let us say it is 100 daily. So in a month or two they could manufacture our entire stockpile. If hostilities break out they will ramp up production. If China plays the role that Persia played (the money) in the Peloponnesian War and supplies Russia vs The West then China, with Russia as proxy, wins. They are already doing this. How far this goes depends on how far the fools and traitors running things push it. If all the way then the Chinese would end up inheriting the Earth as we did after WW2. We have nowhere near the manufacturing capacity to attack on the scale needed to degrade their ability to do this unless we use nuclear weapons. I wonder if Putin is holding back in Ukraine in part with the hope that the West will come to its senses and recognize that Russia’s neighbor is China and that Russia will need Allies with which to balance against China. Putin is likely looking down the road to the time when China will want to take Russian resources and treat the Russians as a nuisance. Perhaps Putin’s caution is in part dictated by the need to look over his shoulder to the East. Plus if he is in all the way against Europe it could open the door for someone to move in from the East. What was the ‘thought’ process used to decide that war with Russia was tenable? Are the Chinese in the background here driving this forward to serve their ends?
Low ROI indeed. Unless they are maneuvering their two main rivals against each other. If the goal is power and global hegemony then money is just a means. It depends on what they are after. That what one thinks about that depends on who one believes. Is it the 100 year marathon or just doing business? Revenge for the 100 years of humiliation? Han ethnonatiinism? Spreading the latest version of heaven o. Earth/communism?
Very interesting angle on China wanting to pit their two main rivals against each other. That angle never dawned on me until now. But it makes as much sense as anything else these days.
Luttwak must write for Newsweek, every time I seen one of their articles posted on Real Clear…. Ukraine is just short some miracle to turn the tide.

To clarify. The American people don’t want war. It’s the globalists in the administration who have hijacked our foreign policy who seem intent on war.
And it's terrifying how little say any ordinary Joe has in all this.
We don’t!

That was the point that leaped out at me, china’s improving manufacturing ability.
Chinas very much what in it for them mentality, and blowing stuff up has a low roi.
“Ancient Chinese secret, huh?”
Let’s play “You and Him Fight”
