Yeah, it's just like with political appointments. People float the names of their own choices in the hope of creating some buzz and the idea catching on.

In reading the material in the links, Gnosticism jumps right out. Seems to me that battle was fought and mostly won centuries age. But hadn’t been aware of the Jewish variant and the dangers inherent.

Not won. It took on new life during the Renaissance (Hermetism) and then in the Enlightenment--especially in German ideology, like Hegel. Most modernist "Catholic" thinkers are heavily influenced by these neoplatonic and gnostic strains of thought. Highly complex subject.

Maybe now it’s a question “Is the Pope a Catholic”. Seem I have heard that more than occasionally over the last decade.
