I think it's more helpful to look at the situation differently. The Obiden regime has succeeded at their goals beyond their wildest expectations. They have destroyed the most powerful country in earth. At this point, they can either
1) cancel elections and enjoy their newly gained absolute power, or
2) sweep their immense winnings off of the table, buy Venezuela, and live filthy rich forever

So these seemingly pathetic calls for a ceasefire were nothing more than Info War narrative shaping in preparation for the next false flag or other provocation in which the Regime points to their repeated ceasefire overtures blah blah blah.
If, indeed, the Russian are on the verge of collapsing the Ukrainian resistance in the east, then this is the most dangerous moment coming- there will be great temptation for Zhou or whoever is using Biden as a hand puppet to commit air support and ground troops to avoid the defeat.

If that was ever true (wasn't) and Putin couldn't successfully take a country literally sitting on his doorstep...then why is there need for NATO?

They would much rather goad the Russians into an aggression. That way they can summon all of NATO and ride to battle with bright shiny halos.
