There is also news that tends to downplay the threat from Covid. All of this coming shortly before mandates are due to go into effect—amid increasing opposition—as well as with court challenges increasingly serious court challenges, couldn’t happen at a better time.

I would guess that Sowell might say that they're so completely wed to the outlook of a childish sort of idealism that any attempt to apply a cost-benefit analysis or even apply a template acknowledging cause and effect is anathema to them.
