The collective West is in a tizzy over the prospect of the residents of heavily Russian oblasts that were formerly part of Ukraine voting to join the Russian Federation. Those residents have had enough of Ukrainian nationalists trying to force them into second class citizenship just because they’re Russian speakers—along with about 40% of former Ukraine. That’s not democratic, it’s sham! cry the collective West.
Lt. Col. Max Morton wrote about the historical results when governments make the demand "submit" as Von der Leyen just did, and what happens when the reply is "or what"?
He wrote consistently up until the 2020 election, not sure why he stopped..
Morton makes compelling arguments that the downward spiral we have fallen into will end up in the ‘Or what?’ category that he describes. Then what? I have no confidence ‘Joe Biden’, and his crack team of Blinken, Nuland, Sullivan and Austin and their ‘speechwriters’, and the powers that be who stand behind them, have any intention of stopping this metastasizing war in Ukraine and addressing the growing risks it creates. More likely, they will double down.
Or that 'Joe Biden' and his domestic lieutenants, Merrick Garland and Christopher Wray, have any intention of reversing the increasingly political and authoritarian direction of law enforcement and intelligence operations in the country.
Morton calls this a ‘fatal miscalculation’ which is likely to have devastating consequences.
Agreed, Cassander, there is no evidence Biden and his team will stop either overseas or domestically. Will that be a "fatal miscalculation?' It doesn't matter what we think at this point it matters what they think - and they don't think so. They think they have the power to make us cower and kowtow to their tyranny. Resist too much and they will send the FBI to swat us or Ruby Ridge us; the IRS to threaten and bankrupt us; or the military to shoot us. After all we don't have F15s. If we protest they will throw us in solitary confinement. They recognize no laws or authority other than their raw power.
If this ends up being a fatal miscalculation on their part it will be because one cannot compel loyalty of the heart through fear and terror (as Morton notes), only hatred and zealous resistance. Do Americans have it in us to resist this tyranny? Pushed far enough I think we do. The question is, how far will that be?
@Dave -- I agree. I had not been familiar with Morton or his POV. It is a great read and I'm inclined to believe he is right about the 'fatal miscalculation' he describes.
Have you noticed that the number of so-called miscreant nations only continues to grow with time? As the current recession becomes more severe (and it will), the anger will only increase. When the history books are written, my money is on countries like Poland, Hungary, and potentially Italy being lauded as the true leaders that brought real freedom back to the continent.
We will all be part of the Borg!
The EU has one tool, a sixteen pound sledgehammer, very unwieldy for most constructive uses, but very effective for destruction.

It's a great read, imho, as is most of his work.

I would ask: How is he wrong?
Yep, and it’s those “devastating consequences” that are keeping me up at night.

He wrote a little at the federalist after, but only seems active on Twitter now.

And Russia?
