Briefly noted—not because this isn’t an important development, but just because we can keep it brief by trying to fit it within the big picture. Thanks for reading Meaning In History!
I stand in awe of Mark and those who comment on this site. I have neither your intelligence nor expertise. However I do notice a tendency to negativism. First let me postulate that our politicians, especially the Clintons and Obama, view everything from their field of expertise, politics. Reality is secondary. As an example, 'woke' serves a political purpose. Never mind that my experience from adolescence is that boys are attracted to girls, and I assume vice versa, and they even fall in love. I have had friends who were homosexual, but they were few and far between. Then we now have something called Modern Monetary Theory, which serves the political purpose of unlimited borrowing. No, neither Keynes nor any real economist ever proposed this, and those who do should go back and study Economics 101. Further, I fail to see how selectively applying the law can lead to anything but a disrespect for the law, and the lawmakers should be concerned that their laws will not be regarded as inviolate. With Nixon the government made a big deal of a cover-up. Now the government does nothing but. Habeaus Corpus has existed in English law for a thousand years. No more. Illegal searches and seizures? Lawyer-client privilege? Free speech? Our government even seems to be on the side of the predators against the law-abiding citizens. In foreign policy the government may be pursuing ends in line with politics, but they are neither constructive nor likely to be successful. Afghanistan and the Ukraine - total disasters. When governments conduct policy so in conflict with reality, are we to assume that they are in total control and will dominate us all? They will fail, and the world will be the better for it.
I wonder when We The People will demand that abuses by prosecutors be severely penalized? Obviously Brady violations were rampant in the J6 tribunals, the presiding judges should sanction every prosecutor that withheld evidence from defendants, then said attorneys should be disbarred, be found jointly liable with the government for civil damages, and criminally prosecuted, THIS IS WHAT TRUE JUSTICE DEMANDS!!!
What’s keeping the j6 prisoners in jail? They are clearly held in violation of their constitutional rights. Why can’t Kev and and whoever is backing him take the next step and force there release?
Merrick Garland is keeping them in jail. You have to remember, Mr. Kaplan, there are many nefarious characters operating within our government who have power and what appears to be free reign to terrorize those who dissent from their POV and ideology. Those that do are treated harshly which means their lives are turned upside down with frivolous lawsuits and pressure to conform. Politicians, lacking a spine are bullied into silence or agreement in order to remain at the trough where the wealth of this country is distributed to those who will bend to the whims of their paymasters.
All that McCarthy could really do is use his pulpit to bring attention to the violations, but, that alone, would be a powerful move if he had the stones to do it. I've always thought it unseemly (if not a flat-out ethics violation back in the days of decorum) for a sitting member of Congress to comment on pending litigation, but, hell, the Dems play that game daily. If he sat down with counsel to the J6 defendants to generate a concise list of the Constitutional violations they're seeing, it could really build support, even among the RINOs and Dems who are not otherwise hopelessly gone.
Doc Shipwrecked (whom Mark quotes) represents two dozen or so J6 defendants and just came back on Substack last week. Interesting perspectives there.
I think Jay Powell has moved on. He just wants to keep it going. I think he wants it to be 100 degrees in Dallas, TX, and for the market to still be debating if there's another quarter point hike coming when summer comes. When the debt ceiling standoff is blowing up the country and as Quantitative Tightening continues in the background.
I don't have any faith in Trump doing in 2024 onwards what he promised to do in 2016. Having said that, I think DeSantis should stay in Florida and keep the place solid Red for years to come. Who knows, if things break down, Red states like Florida might well become the new centre of gravity in the US.
FREE TUCKER CARLSON!
Tucker hasn't run a new video from the J6 cameras since the first night he ran them. He is clearly being held prisoner on his own show.
FREE TUCKER CARLSON! FREE TUCKER NOW!!!!!
Lessons learned
Fair play to McCarthy.

Julie Kelly asking if any gop Senator supported the Tucker Tapes?

Vance seems the only one.
Two reply posts that I particularly like:

Never had much use or respect for Turtle, but his latest outburst about the Jan 6 tapes puts him in the category two notches below totally useless.
and as a turtle, he doesn’t have a leg to stand on
"Negative efficacy" like we learned about vaccines.
Add this to the mix with a h/t to mistcr: DDB yesterday:

Meanwhile Trump explicitly declared war on the GOPe at CPAC. I think he’s leaving DeSantis in the dust.
He talked well.
"a curious aspect"
call it irony
Good v Evil.
My mom and I were talking about this tonight. This not about political parties. This is about good vs evil.
