“They want to finish things off in a way that creates even greater economic trouble for the West”.,… , Mark, could you forward a copy of this to Janet-we can absolutely fight multiple wars on multiple fronts-Yellen? Everyone else in the known Universe sees that it is the West that is continuing to suffer economically and militarily to a far greater extent than Russia, but somehow the Neocons continue to default to their Alfred E. Newman posture of “What, me worry?”. I think it was Ayn Rand who said, “You can ignore reality, but you can’t avoid it”. The reckoning is going to be formidable.

Putin should take everything except Galicia and then force EU to admit them. Let them choke on that.

Please arrange comments chronologically. Other Substack writes do, why is this format chosen?

Expand full comment

Huh? If you look at the top of the comments, you’ll see a menu that gives YOU the option of listing the comments in chronological order.

Expand full comment

Do you take me for an imbecile? Of course I'm aware of that but that option requires me to select it every damn time I wish to read the comments. when it is up to the site owner to determine and fix the order of commentary

One of the first things we learned in law school is to never ask a question that you don't want to hear the answer to...or something like that. :-)

PS -- Actually, if we have a choice I propose that Mark set the comments so that mine are always at the top regardless of which setting anyone chooses.

Life is tough, Bob. Then you die. :)

I don't think BA was insulting your intelligence just giving you the option to choose your own setting. I think Mark has noted below the default is chronological with newest first. I know if I have selected top first that remains my default until I change it to another setting. If you are not a frequent visitor very few readers who comment here are prone to insulting others or the community here. IMHO.

"New first" is the default setting. Perhaps I should ask readers their preference.

Expand full comment

I prefer the setting as is.

Same. I typically read Mark's pieces (and immediate comments) when I first get the Substack notice that they're published, coming back later for the remainder of the discussion (which I also find quite valuable). Helps to start from the newest and work my way down until I hit the ones I've already read.

As do I, same format as you and there are few, if any, insults and when there are rude commenters, Mark gets rid of them. :o) Although I wonder what they said...*chuckle*

All comments come to my email inbox, which is where I monitor them, so I have no particular preference. I may add a poll to a post asking for preferences.

I think you'll find your readers like it as is, but please take the poll if you think it is necessary.

The French general is speaking sense. It's good to know that there are some European versions of Col. MacGregor out there. Meanwhile, the French Chief of Staff is very aptly named: Schill.

In our lifetime, will we see the day when a more powerful nation dictates terms to us? We're getting too big for our britches. The government ought to go back to what it does best: pushing the middle class around.

I think we’re headed there, simply because so far no consequences have affected our leaders. They will keep going until the defeat is so complete it can’t be ignored. I hope I’m wrong. But our dear leaders learned nothing from Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan.

I don't think it's ever been about Ukraine or "submitting to Russia's will." It's about that, without provocation, US elites treat Russians like subhuman garbage, won't even have a conversation with Russian officials. If a US Senator wants to invite Russian officials to speak in the US, GOP elites will intervene and stop it from happening. This is criminal. Who do we vote for to stop this? No one in the US. Mr. Putin simply wishes US to treat Russians as normal human beings, not vassals to be plundered. Mr. Putin is humanity's only hope.

The U.S. squandered an opportunity to make a friend of Russia. Instead of enabling the theft of their resources we should have enabled their return to health and nurtured their economy to become a trusted trade partner. Russia historically is a faithful Christian Nation and China, whom we devoted our attention, has stolen our trade secrets, our military secrets, our security secrets and it remains a communist nation while dominating world trade through manufacturing power and mercantile trade practice. This we have given them freely. What we have now is a Walmart economy, cheap junk, and fewer and fewer jobs for its citizens and welfare for the invaders. This cannot last and we are experiencing why it won’t.

Very good points, thanks for mentioning them.

GOP elites? The ones who used Ukraine as a staging ground for plunder are mostly Democrats. Ever hear of Bursima? I believe the western elites were making an energy play there. Staking out ground to control what pipelines went where and who got to profit. And I think these ghouls believe destruction is fine as long as they can profit from rebuilding.

I'm glad you noticed the term "GOP Elites." My first thought was to say Mitch McConnell because he in fact did turn down Senator Rand Paul's request a few years ago to invite some Russians to US to speak. I decided against using McConnell's name as some might think once McConnell's gone it will be better-because it won't, plenty of others will fill his place. I don't like the term "GOP elites," used it as shorthand.

That's the heart of the problem, Susan. The absolute refusal of the neocons to adapt and learn. For them, Russia is still a gas station masquerading as a country. They can't learn, so they're going to have to be taught.
