Yesterday and today I came across several items this fit together somewhat loosely under this heading, so I’ll lump them into this post. Thanks for reading Meaning In History! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. First, Larry Johnson includes
Kupchan, professor at...Georgetown University...because of $#$ing course he is. As far as institutional captures go, this one really kills me. Barely recognizable from the academic institution it was in my day, barely 30-35 years ago.
Would a regime which conspired to release a manmade virus which killed millions around the world have too many qualms to fire a nuclear warhead in the direction of its enemy, a 'Hitler-esque madman'?
These NEOCONS are such and arrogant and deceitful bunch. The notion that we should be the great protector and advocate for democracy is such BS, what they really want is to increase their wealth through the state and achieve more power to rule the world.
At one point the interviewer briefly debates with Kupchan which is the 'democracy' and which is the 'autocracy'...vis a vis Russia and the US. In one of the comments below the video a reader notes that Putin has 70-80% popular support and the US Congress has 30% support (if that...). So is a government which enjoys relatively low popular support a Democracy and a government which enjoys substantial popular support an Autocracy? Good question!
Yeah, that illustrates the cartoonish views many Americans have of both Russia and America. The reality is that America is ruled by an oligarchy, although one rarely hears that word used to describe it. Yes, it's a somewhat fluid oligarchy in its membership, but studies have confirmed that it's becoming less fluid. The ways that the ruling class manipulates elections illustrates their determination to keep certain parts of the population 'in their place'.
Military industrial complex pushed hard for NATO’s expansion, including Ukraine and Georgia, as a way to sell more weapons.
But the Ukraine war, with a major cause being nato invite to Ukraine, May show Western Weapons are over priced, low reliability, low capability, thus decreasing sales.
I don't share the concern for the possibility of a larger war. Putin surely shares Napoleon's concern not to interfere when your enemy is destroying himself. For our part we are not capable of achieving any military success. Additionally the real enemy of the neocons and our regime is us, as Pogo would say. In it for the power and the money, losing in the Ukraine is a lucrative business. Just keep us peons under control. They are not about to arm us and train us in the use of weapons.
Biden’s flippant remark to the press regarding the risks involved in supplying F-16’s to Ukraine pretty much sums up the Neocon’s strategy; long on bravado and short on strategic reflection.
I have to agree with you about the likelihood of a direct attack on Russia, it just seems so recklessly and catastrophically provocative that I can’t imagine even these morons capable of such a suicidal act. However, considering where we are today and the dazzling displays of incompetence that we are witnessing on an almost daily basis, I’m not sure that it can be categorically ruled out. A truly terrifying thought.
Yes, I saw that the other day but forgot to include it. He had been very positive in the opposite direction. All explanations seem to have some sort of problem, but the silence of Russia seems to point toward friendly fire, as I said.

Graduated in the late 70s and horrified at what it has become. But maybe it was rotting back then too.

They might have qualms if the Hitler-esque madman had nukes.
That Kupchan interview is wild. Delusions gone wild. He supports the mindset of our desire to be “the great protector and advocate for Democracy”.

Can the MSM be considered an oligarchy?
Putin’s characterization of the US government as an empire of lies couldn’t have been more apt. Depressing, but apt.
Amusing Karma…

And don’t assume the F 16 pilots are all “Ukrainians”.

How does North Korea respond when we practice war games in their hood?
