Using a line from the Hunt for Red October when the Russian sub was trying to sink Red October: He took the safety off his 2nd torpedo and blow his sub up, hence we've taken sanctions against Russia that will result in torpedoing ourselves. It's a bad movie so far.

I think one of the reasons Putin's "De-Nazification" propaganda didn't resonate abroad is that westerners hear the term and think "Oh, Nazi is what *we* call people when we're out of serious arguments"

The polling confirms my opinion of the average American, I agree with H. L. Mencken, this is a country filled with morons.

When all the dust settles, the only route for the U.S. is strict isolationism. Shut the rest of the world out and self-sustain. We have the resources.

I've thanked you in the past, but this post is outstanding. My one regret is that I fear nobody in Washington is interested, but if they were this lays out all the important matters that should concern them. Are they feckless, or is their neglect of these matters deliberate?

If you have 21 minutes, this video with nearly 5 million views really explains what is happening mentally. So much hits home, like the waves of fear used to form mass psychosis. It was worth my time to watch. https://youtu.be/09maaUaRT4M

And just in case anyone out there isn't familiar with the quote from Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, it's this:

“How did you go bankrupt?” Bill asked.

“Two ways,” Mike said. “Gradually and then suddenly.”

“What brought it on?”

“Friends,” said Mike. “I had a lot of friends. False friends. Then I had creditors, too. Probably had more creditors than anybody in England.”

In April of 2020 I noted on a site that shall not be named:

"More and more Americans will come to know Hemingway's 'gradually then suddenly' quip, and that's not a good thing." (tinyurl.com/2zstk27n)

We're getting closer to this bearing out, and I would even say google trend may be showing evidence of such before too terribly long.

As depressing as all you say here is, Mark, the real wrist-slitter will come when you lead us in a discussion of "whither interest rates?" and all the implications thereof - perhaps especially as they relate not just to new deficit spending but also to maturing notes and bonds and the need to roll them over at ... 4%? 5? 6?

Gradually then suddenly indeed.

And what if this escalated in Europe and Brandon keeps sending more and more troops? And what if China bluffs an attack on Taiwan while instead invades our Mainland on the Left Coast and through Mexico? Author JR Nyquist claims that this is the actual goal of China. Taiwan is a smokescreen.

And then we see that the US is busy stationing as much as 100,000 troops in Europe:

My fevered conspiracy brain sees this, partly, as a move to get as many active military out of CONUS as possible. And why would the gangsters want active military out of the way? Do they have plans for Summer/ Fall that would not be palatable to soldiers, especially the non coms? We can't suppose that the DC crew actually entertains the idea of using the troops against Russia. Hmmmm...

Mark,

Should the title of this piece have been: "Wither the Dollar"?

“when asked whether the US should take “military action” if it “risks a nuclear war with Russia” the total in favor drops precipitously to 35%.”

At least 35% of this country live in a delusional fantasy. But given events of the past 5 years, we already knew that.
