Today, Biden held a press conference on the topic of unidentified aerial objects. Sounded like we cannot tell the difference between friend and foe in the sky. They will create an inventory...? Sounds ominous.

Proving anew the adage to not ascribe to situations an evil & complex intent where simple stupidity and incompetence will suffice (+ truth is stranger than fiction). Also on display is opportunistic post-event mendacity: all the seemingly at odds explanations (we didn't see them until we knew to look for them and then found them) of previous balloon tracks would be consistent if, in fact, the balloons are USofA property and known already-tracked projects. Face meet palm.

What if all the calamities can be ascribed to "evil + complex intent + stupidity + incompetence + opportunistic post-event mendacity"? Do they get a pass then?

Dear gwb - your question combines all causes, accidental, stupid, and intentional. The situation(s) should not be given a pass for any cause, but the course of action for fixes does depend how the mess was made

You are correct about that. My point was that these categories are not mutually exclusive and that all of the causes you listed may be occurring simultaneously in the overall story. Parts of the story seem accidental (e.g., loss of a missile), other parts may be downright stupid or intentional (e.g., allowing a Chinese "weather" balloon to fly unimpeded across the country), while other parts seem intended to misinform (e.g., alien UFOs). And honestly, I don't have anything against aliens or the saucers they drive. ☺

Dear gwb - oh! without doubt, I concur. I wish this was all Mr Smith and Will Robinson.

Mark, if it weren’t for your levity (!) and caustic humour, I’d be wringing my hands!!! I caught Surber’s piece - high form today - we are not only a laughingstock the world over, but, as others have pointed out, supremely hypocrital in our “border” policies! Letting the Chinese-made fentanyl pour in from Mexico while we shoot down our own(can’t make it up category?) big -brother-is-watching-for-drugs contraptions soaring overhead…mind boggling madness.

The missiles we use to shoot down these balloons cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Are they as slow and difficult to replace as those we have sent to Ukraine? Do the Chinese really supply the propellant for new missiles and rockets? Are we really paying for expensive target practice with difficult to replace materiel? Shoot down enough balloons and we will not have enough weapons to fight the enemy Air Force during the war that the best and the brightest are sundowning us into.

I sometimes question Alinsky's rule on ridiculing your opponent, as the leftists seem to be immune from shame - or it is never heaped upon them in sufficient quantity and duration by the MSM as it is when conservatives are targeted. While the balloons are just the latest episode deserving of ridicule, Joe Biden, like Fetterman has become, is a constant source of ridicule. But in the face of all Biden's gaffes, word salads, forgetting cabinet secretary names, yelling at audiences, etc., ad nauseum, he continues along as if he is the only sentient one on the stage. I'm in disbelief that he is still upright, much less president. As a nation we have reached a nadir no one could have foreseen just a decade ago.

If I were the Russians or the Chinese, I would be releasing these balloons dozens at a time every single day into the western northern jet stream just for the fun of it.
