"According to reports, to end the impasse, Mr McCarthy agreed a deal that the House would commit to passing bills that would cap all discretionary defence spending at 2022 financial year levels, meaning roughly $1.47 trillion."
This is not a win. Capping at 2022 levels simply means the outlandish defense spending now has a floor of $1.4T perpetuity. Isn't that over $600B in new spending that is now automatic? That's something like a near doubling in defense spending even if there is no war in Ukraine. Once again we've been had.
What's sad is that these "concessions" are what any normal conservative would be implementing anyway. But in our wacky "black is white" universe, things like controlling the budget, avoiding stupid wars and making sure that everyone gets to read the bills before they are passed seem like brutal, extremist impositions to the majority of the GOP.
Thanks for the correction however; you know regardless of whether it is Omnibus or DoD budget once they set a floor the money keeps rolling out at the same pace. The DoD is going to need a lot more money and the reasoning will be weapons replenishment and R&D in order to update their obsolete military hardware.
An interesting remark by the hostess of interview with Martyanov about how much there is in common between Russians and Poles, especially in terms of the traditional approach to the family. We need more discussions like this one, though I don't expect it to happen. For a long time, topic of Poland appeared in social networks and conversations only after another sharp statement from its government, and recently in connection with Polish mercenaries in Ukraine. I have a sad feeling that Poland is being dragged and prepared to replace Ukraine after it'll be drained of blood and dumped to gurbage. And I'm afraid the next round will be much nastier.
Refighting the last century's wars--this time with a mythical American ally--is not the way forward for Poland. No more than joining itself to a corrupt EU.
This may be a digression, but I remembered your confession in another post that you first heard the Belarusian language and were surprised how similar it was to Polish (there was embedded a video where Lukashenko and a man from his government were chopping wood and joking that they pass it to Europe as a help for the winter). In fact, they both spoke Russian: Lukashenko with a slight Belarusian accent, his colleague sounded just perfect. Another evidence of how close our peoples are.
Thank you for your work. Your sharp and eloquent analysis has helped me get through the darkest first months of spring 2022 and I appreciate it.
Ha! Very interesting. Normally I can only pick up a few words of Russian. Western Ukrainian is more intelligible to me, and Serbian especially. I realized that most Belarussians use Russian, but was surprised at how "normal" it sounded to me. :-)

IMO any war lasts way too long. A popular hypothesis on Russian social networks is that the US is prolonging the war by regulating the quantity and quality of arms supplies. Robbery of the European economy takes time. And the hope for regime change in the RF is obviously resilient.
I subscribed to Time magazine for twenty years, reading it from cover to cover every week. Even though it was left-leaning, I thought it was beneficial to keep my echo chamber in check. I cancelled it in 2017 when they couldn’t contain their hatred for Trump.

Well, that's one of the inaccuracies I referred to. 1.4T is the total Omnibus, not the DoD budget.
