After looking at Bessent's resume, what could possibly motivate Trump to nominate this guy? A billionare? Soros employee? Married to another man? Children via surrogacy? Trump couldn't have found someone else?

"While at Soros Fund Management, Bessent bet against the yen, generating almost $1 billion over a three-month period, the Journal noted." This is how we make money - via financial engineering and betting against currencies, not by creation of real wealth? This guy is not who we need at Treasury.

Many years ago, when I respected National Review and David French, he had a column that the country could survive nuclear war. He seems to fit right in with Buchanan and other pro-war supporters.

We are actually at the point in this country where we talk about this insanity.

But..... if you are okay with killing unborn children, transing children, think two men can get married, deny the existence of God, I guess I can understand how you think that wiping out hundreds of millions is okay.

I was just going to comment about how I was sure Trump World was going to crow about all the “strong women” in his cabinet… now they one-upped me by bragging about the first OPENLY “gay” Treasury Secretary. Just shows you how little Trump World actually understands the voters who elected him. At this point I will not be surprised (truly) if he nominates someone claiming to be “trans” to a post.

I see all signs, before and after the election, pointing to Trump and his men (and the men who donated money to Trump) fortifying the claims of Obergefell going forward. They are in a full-court press to distinguish the naturalness, and goodness, of two men marrying each other and buying children to form a family, from the unnaturalness of mothers transitioning children. In other words, gay men who call themselves married and purchase babies, are our allies against the evils of transgender ideology. Because children who think they are transgender are actually gay and transitioning them is pharmaceutical conversion; ask JD Vance and Joe Rogan. It is quite distressing to watch conservatives climb on board that train. I doubt that America can redefine marriage without cost to itself or its allies on whom it imposes this change. Hubris. I pray that the rest of the world can resist this change, but the moneymen will make it painful. So far the moneymen do not want it to be optional. You are either for gay marriage, or you are against us.

This is why I am curious about Russian Christianity. Too bad we don't have a curious and free press which is also trying to better understand things...

What would you like to know, Cass? I am Greek Orthodox and Russia is an Orthodox country and adheres to essentially the same Orthodox tenets. Russia was converted from paganism to the Orthodox faith by the Greek church in the Eastern roman Empire known as Byzantium in the late 10th century. The Russian alphabet was created by Greek clergymen of which one was St. Cyril hence the name, Cyrillic alphabet. Upon the fall of Constantinople in May 1453 and the demise of the Byzantium Empire, Russia attempted to assume the leadership of the Orthodox world. If you ever read Samuel Huntington's great book "The Clash of Civilizations" he broke down the world into nine civilizations of which the Russian Empire was referred to as the Orthodox world. Of course there are other Christian sects within the Orthodox sphere, but these are much smaller as Russia is largely (~71%) other Christian (Catholic)~2%, Islam 10% non-affliated Christian 10%, pagan, etc 1%. Ukraine is largely Orthodox (Poland largely Catholic) and the church has been relegated to underground by the secular Jewish leader Zelensky.

Thanks for the history, etc., Cosmo. What I was driving at, however, is a broader discussion/understanding of how Russia's orthodox Christianity differentiates it (in terms of culture, politics, morality, spirituality, worldview, etc.) from the increasingly agnostic, nihilist, consumerist West. Does it really make a difference?

Expand full comment

The difference is that Eastern Christianity of the Greek variety is fundamentally national. Each nationality basically has its own church which is associated with national feeling--thus you hear Greeks referring to "Greek Easter" and flying Greek flags at their homes, like my super Prog Greek neighbors. That's a societal strength, but also a problem because religion becomes an arm of the state.

The Protestant Revolt broke up the idea of a Christian civilization, of Christendom, also devolving toward national churches as arms of the state. Those national churches remain in northern Europe but have lost their civilizational pull due to conceptual deficiencies.

The Catholics struggled for independence from the modern national states, not terribly successfully but with some victories. Then after WW2 the Catholic clergy ended up aligning with Liberal Democracy at V2. That move was led by the Germans and French who were seeking cultural unity with their Protestant neighbors and have always gravitated toward national churches. That process isn't complete, but has kicked the civilizational legs out from under a key institution of the civilizational area of the West.

You can see his daughter and son-in-law's ideologies get his attention. While he said neither would be a part of his administration, he never said they would not influence his decisions on policy. Trump 2.0 is shaping up to be a disaster. Good for the elites and the managerial class, but he will betray his base and probably already has, except for the Evangelical zealots who worship Zion.

Right. It’s not just a Trump phenomenon. The moment when I realized this was when all those “conservatives” rushed and gushed to congratulate podcaster Dave Rubin on his acquisition of children.

I recently read "Producing the Global Baby" by Jeff Shafer, on how family law is changing to reflect the reality that children are now a manufacturable product.

https://humanumreview.com/articles/producing-the-global-baby

Lest anyone reading this think I'm picking on gay men, Mr. Shafer points out that

"Recall Roe v. Wade's iconic national subversion of the law as the Supreme Court constitutionalized the idea that pregnant women are in non-relation to the fetal presence located within them, and as a result are free of responsibility to it. Whether a relation and responsibility later come into being between them is attributable to the mother's choice or intent, not because of a pre-existing, embodied truth."

Women got the party started with desiring abortion: every child a wanted [chosen] child. The Rubins and Thiels and Bessents and Greenwalds and Buttigiegs are the logical endpoint of adults choosing whether a child comes into being or not.

Crooke (although without sourcing) quoting Trump:

“We need peace without delay … The foreign policy establishment keeps trying to pull the world into conflict. The greatest threat to Western civilization today is not Russia. It’s probably more than anything else ourselves… There must be a complete commitment to dismantling the entire Globalist Neo-con establishment that is perpetually dragging us into endless wars, pretending to fight for freedom and democracy abroad while they turn us into a Third World country and a Third World dictatorship right here at home. The State Department, the Defense bureaucracy, the intelligence services and all of the rest need to be completely overhauled and reconstituted. To fire the Deep Staters and put America first – we have to put America First”.

Until Trump repudiates this statement, and notwithstanding the mis-, dis- and shit-information emanating all around us, I believe and trust Trump. Which is not to say that his enemies will not try to defeat...and destroy...him.

Expand full comment

Trump's correct, but that doesn't mean that Putin won't delay. Russia is winning and delay allows Russia to keep the winning going.

Expand full comment

I would formulate this concept slightly differently.

I don't think Putin will stop the war to negotiate peace terms. As you say, he is winning, and he will keep winning until he gets what he wants. He certainly will not get tricked into a freeze to negotiate peace during which Ukraine rearms and rebuilds its military.

But once he gets what he wants he will definitely stop since Russia has suffered hundreds of thousands of casualties and spent billions of rubles on this war. And Russia has no imperial ambitions.

Mark linked to this a week or so ago. Much has happened since then. I became skeptical of Trump well before the election. I'm glad he won, but until we see this administration in action and follow through with these promises to end the conflict, I remain skeptical. You might trust Trump, but can some of the people he has selected be trusted. Gorka is very anti-Russia and pro-Zionist. As are many others. That, to me, does not instill confidence.

I read the same stuff and have the same concerns as you Cosmo. I am choosing to see the glass as half full. We'll see.

PS - The quoted excerpt seems far too articulate for Trump to have actually spoken these words... :-)

Expand full comment

I'd like to see the empty glass as half full too. Yes, we shall see.

My sense is that in the geopolitical sphere Trump is being managed by his Zionist overlords hence the war cabinet and financial leadership under Zionists. As for the domestic sphere Trump has payback and accountability in mind and this is what animates his base. These issues tend to distract the base from the influence of the Israel Lobby and Trump's overlords who will continue to prosper while average Americans suffer.

As for the excerpt noted above perhaps it was too articulate for Trump, but what president doesn't have an cadre of writers to pen the messages they deliver for the masses. Whatever his failings in speech still far outweighs the idiocracy of Kamala Harris. She even made GWB seem coherent.

Put yourself in Putin's position. Why would he do any favors for Trump? Why would he allow Trump to play "peacemaker" after all Trump did to stoke war on Russia with his sanctions and arming of Ukraine? Putin, IMO, should force America to own this war. He should insist on direct negotiations, one on one, US/Russia, to decide the fate of NATO. Russia can deal with Ukraine--none of America's business.

My good nature wants to think that perhaps Trump is trying to prove he is not a Putin stooge by the full-on Zionist embrace. It's pretty depressing to be betrayed in such a way.

Trump can appoint whomever he wants, but Russia is going to do what it needs to do to establish facts on the ground to achieve their goals.

Confirmation that Trump intends to follow what I believe is a dead end approach:

Waltz emphasized that a key priority will be organizing **talks between Russia and Ukraine,** with the aim of bringing both sides together to negotiate a ceasefire or peace agreement. “We need to discuss who is at this table, whether it will be an agreement, a truce, how to put both sides at the negotiating table, and then what is the scope of the deal,” he said.

Off to a bad start. Trump still wants to pretend that the war is between Russia and Ukraine, rather than between Russia and the US/Anglo-Zionists. Why would Russia participate in a charade like that? Putin has repeatedly said that he'll negotiate with the REAL parties in interest.

Expand full comment

The flip side is...if Putin gets exactly what he has said he requires to end the 'war', I'm not sure he'll care how Waltz...or Trump...characterizes it.

Expand full comment

I disagree. Putin owes something to the Russian people and the Ukrainian people--accountability. He needs to insist on American ownership of the war and all the suffering and death.

Expand full comment

Not to quibble, but if (when) Putin gets what he is requiring (Crimea, the 4 eastern oblasts, no Nazis, Ukr neutrality, no NATO) he will have won and it will be utterly obvious. And then Trump can try to spin it however he likes.

And you know (because I've been saying this ad nauseam) the spin that I predict Trump attempts is to settle Ukr and then take credit for a Middle Eastern peace settlement (which he needs Putin to assist in).

I still think this is a likely outcome, notwithstanding the uncertainties and black swans which Biden's escalation and Trump's cabinet picks could result in.
