''He adds that "the Das Reich Nazi division that committed the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre [a famous massacre in France committed by the Nazis during WW2], they were all Ukrainians, 95% of them were Ukrainians."
What is this? There was a Ukrainian SS Division Galicia but they never fought in France. Das Reich was a predominately a German division. A guy like this would know his history. The soldiers that were held to be responsible were mostly from Alsace. It's the first I've heard of Ukrainians serving in Das Reich.
If you're fluent in French, feel free to chip in with translation. Youtube translation a bit wonky.
Interesting. I did some checking via Wikipedia and could find nothing to corroborate what he says re Ukrainians in Das Reich. Thanks. However, overall his perspective is historically correct.
Thanks for the history lesson. Here's another one. The Soviet Union enslaved not only every country they occupied after WWII but their own citizenry as well. It is this behavior, and not historical events within no one's living memory. The memory of the Soviet Union, is however in living memory and it is certainly alive in the memory of one V. Putin. He doesn't care one bit about the machinations of 19th Century empires. Here is all you need to know about the current situation. Putin is playing by Lenin's Playbook. Page One, Rule One:
"Probe with bayonets. Where you find mush, proceed. Where you find steel, withdraw."
V. I. Lenin
You want peace? Don't waste your time mulling over the Austro/ Hungarian Empire. Simply demo the steel. He knows his military is weak because defense spending ended up building yachts. It's a hollow shell with nuclear thorns.
Highly relevant lessons from history are to found in Washington's farewell address, wherein he warned against "foreign entanglements." If we as a nation would have consistently heeded his advice throughout our relatively short history, we would not in all likelihood ever had the conditions leading up to the current mess in Ukraine. NATO at present does nothing to enhance US national security, in fact the exact opposite is the case.
Is there something wrong with citing and studying history and its potential implications? Or not? Please make up your mind. If you don't believe history is important, why are you talking about the USSR, an entity that met its demise more than 30 years ago now? If you do, why do you criticize Mark's bringing up the political and cultural history of these territories? Please try to be consistent in your criticisms.
Moreover, it's not Russia that's using Ukraine to wage a proxy war. The US is doing that, without regard for the good of Ukrainians. If the US had not flooded Ukraine with weapons and taken advantage of the rampant corruption, this war would never have happened. Russia did nothing to stop Ukraine's independence and even paid off Ukraine's debts. Or is that history that you're not interested in?
What part of being a Leninist would lead Putin to make Solzhenitsyn required reading in all Russian schools? I've not heard that he's made the works of Lenin required reading.
This is such a concise piece of writing. Thank you Mark for all you are doing. Truly appreciated and in time these articles will be historically significant. Of that I'm sure.
Very interesting interview Mark, especially the “co-responsable” remark. Juillet shows restraint in not lashing out, à la Nuland, “f— the US!” It is appalling that this interview will not be widely broadcast, but here in France, as in the US and across Europe, there is galloping censorship. Macron and money are going to win in a couple weeks….
It is even easier. The legitimate American government that doesn't support Ukraine's Neo-Nazis doesn't even exist. In Molly Ball's words, it is "the result of an informal alliance between left-wing activists and business titans" who 'fortified' the election. See how easy that is?

"Can we really live in a world where Putin’s let back into the New World Order?"

So, The New World Order is real.
Ah! So who are the real conspiracy theorists now?!!
Somewhat off topic but very good news nonetheless (IMO) coming out of Hungary:

Our media is either completely uninformed or totally corrupt.

Yep, easy, peasy. And nobody asks difficult questions.
The German - Russian partition of 1939 approximately followed the Curzon Line.
