i run linux mint on two computers; I used xenix (unix variant) on an intel micro platform in 1982 and own a first edition of kerrigan & richie (the unix creators) on Unix and "C" progamming language. There are hundreds of general apps that run on both Windows and Variations of Unix, e.g. browsers and office suites, but........there are an equal number of special apps that only run on Windows. and stripping the desktop off Android (unix derivative) requires enormous amount of time and unix experience and can be negated the first time you click on a google analytics platform, i.e, any server.
Mark, wanted to thank you. I haven't tracked computer changes for over a decade, always looking only at notebook/laptops when i needed an upgrade. I have 4 laptops with 2 running linux mint that i installed when MS stopped support of Win7. I only keep win11 because of xbox apps on PC and unix simply won't work reliably. Anyway, I went searching for ubuntu derivative pre-installed computers outside of laptops and discovered a whole world in mini-pcs with pre-installed unix variants. My next computer, whether unix or windows will be a mini-pc which i might never have discovered had it not been for your comment on pre-installed unix. many of them are even unix certified; most laptops are not. thanks again.
Ha! As it happens, I spent some time yesterday checking out those mini-pcs. I have one, got it from System 76 years ago, but it's old and lacks processor power and memory. I have Spiral Linux (a spin of Debian) on it with LXQT, but I normally run it with just the Openbox WM to keep memory use as light as possible. I did recently get a new desktop, but was thinking of a second computer. The minis make a lot of sense.
I don't have a membership with TikTok, but, I can still read it when people post/link to it. I also find positions on it no better/worse that positions on other social media sites. If you don't want to be spied on, don't use it; I do get pissed when google play store pushes TikTok to my Android smartphone every time i open a google App - maybe we should ban google instead. All social media should be regulated into two categories: 1) an access platform that allows all postings, no matter how offensive/salacious or incorrect they may be; 2) "Publisher" platform that can moderate/ban contents but can be held criminally/ financially liable for false/incorrect content. Both platforms are, however, a "use at your own risk" when it comes to how the platform owner uses your date. Read the EULA on every program you own. Windows11 is far worse that TikTok and I had to buy it with my most recent computer purchase.
It's easy to buy a computer preloaded with the Linux distro of choice, or to install on your own. It's remarkably easy these days. I've been doing it since '97 to get out from under the Microsoft thumb. Back then it was an adventure. Not now.
It would appear that the DS is rapidly assembling the mechanisms needed to completely control the narrative and eliminate any opposing voices. Massie is spot on, this law will prove to be another Trojan Horse, and like the Patriot Act, that will be turned against the citizens of the United States.
Boggles the mind to imagine Crazy Zhou getting to decide which platforms get thumbs up and which get thumbs down.
Perilous times indeed. Each day makes it that much easier to understand how Nazi Germany evolved.

Republics don’t die. They are murdered.

It’s interesting that the establishment has gone after tiktok while seemingly letting the ‘anti establishment’ turncoats get on major platforms.
The likes of Musk, Maloney, Brand, Tucker, Rogan, Jones, etc. will broach most topics except one.
This substack has an interesting take.
