Wrote my college senior thesis in the spring of 1991 on the going-forward viability of a unified Czechoslovak state, a topic I picked largely because not one of the professors in my department (which then included the lovely Madeleine Albright--she was also a ghoul then, avoided her and her classes like the plague) had any better clue than I of how things would ultimately shake out. While I'm sure that 90% of my paper was proven laughable by subsequent events, my main thesis was that the largely-secular Czechs' tripping over themselves for Western acceptance would ultimately tear them apart from the majority-Catholic, traditionalist Slovaks. Bearing itself out after many twists and turns.

Just a small point. Fico's name is actually pronounced "Fitso"/"Fitsa" This is because in many Slavic languages the -c- letter represents the sound -ts-. For example, Galicia, a region in far western Ukraine, is actually pronounced "Galitsia." Moreover, final -o is usually pronounced in a way that sounds like English -a. Just because knowledge of Slavic languages is generally poor in the west doesn't mean we don't need to try to approximate names the way the name-bearers actually pronounce them. So I vote for a change to "Fitso" as a way of showing respect for a foreign Prime Minister. Even "Fizza" might be all right, since everyone knows pizza, though "Fizza" might end in much too fizzy a way in English, so "Fitso" seems to be the simplest.

I wanted to write comment about his correct pronunciation of his name for a long time, always forgot. Thanks. Call him Fitzo, I think that’s the way for English speakers. Alex (big beard) from Duran is always saying his name correctly.

I also appreciate his determined mispronunciation of that Ukrainian guy's name as Elensky. And some great nicknames such as Anna 360 Baerbock. His walk and talk vids are always entertaining.

Be careful. "C" is, indeed, typically used for the "TS" sound in Slavic languages that use the Latin alphabet. However, in languages that use Cyrillic alphabets "C" stands for the "S" sound. Another one to watch out for is "P", which in Cyrillic alphabets is "R" (the backward R is "ya" and the normal looking E is ye").

Slovak, like the other major West Slavic languages Czech and Polish, does not feature the vowel reduction that is such a feature of Russian. So Fico/Fitso it is.

I remember Mečiar, I met him once long time ago in the meeting. Remind me of Trump - big guy with very strong National feelings. Fico and his party made a mistake I think about the elections for EU parliament before. They didn’t pay too much attention to it. I bet the situation now will be different.

“France’s far right may win big in the EU elections. That’s worrying for migrants, Macron and Ukraine” AP headline. Migrants are worried? Macron’s party is polling badly, and what’s left of “Ukraine?” although the blue and yellow is still fluttering in front of Versailles city hall…get a life, AP! These are the very people who savor the products of the French countryside (all manner of dairy, charcuterie, wine, tender greens and seasonal fruit) while ignoring that one farmer per day commits suicide…and by the way, “far right” is a misnomer because the “right” is now several parties which should imo unite - but it is clear that Macron, like Zhou, is widely detested, except by those who can still “pay.”

France is probably the only country on the planet that still has a political party that calls itself communist. Yet they are never called "Far" or "Extreme" Left. Meanwhile, the "Far" righties are mostly just people who believe what conservatives believed 20 years ago.

Anything that is not absurd and subservient to the ideological imaginings of Marx is referred to as far right. The term “ Right” is used as a pejorative in the never ending projection of the mentally ill woke religion.

Marion Maréchal is the French candidate for the ECR party as an MP in the EU parliament. She is a strong defender of French sovereignty. For those interested:

A niece. And her party in France is called “La Reconquête.” Gives you some idea of where the ordinary French feel regarding unchecked immigration. Along with other European conservatives, she is intent on breaking the Socialist-Macronist alliance that runs the EU and showing Ursula the door.

As far as any pol today is for real, she seems far more genuine than Le Pen. There's no guarantee that Le Pen would do anything about migration, and her economic policies are just the same old tired Big Gov interventionism

Fico is home, apparently doing good - better they thought. Few days ago I heard that Slovakian media (you can guess backed by who) offered $2M for Fico’s picture laying in hospital bed. They tried with drones, tried to pay hospital stuff etc. no pic was taken, I bet they are still fuming over it.
