Scott Adams:

1. It can take years to get anything approved in normal times in California. The backlog from the fire could push it out a decade.

2. The cost of building a custom home in California is roughly double the market value of the home when done.

3. The new home will get a property tax step-up to become unaffordable for anyone who owned the original home for a decade or more.

4. The fire risk will return once everything regrows, and insurance companies will not come back. Here I assume continued state incompetence.

5. There are not enough qualified builders to rebuild.

6. Owners would be rebuilding in the midst of unchecked and growing crime.

Not 100 certain of correctness but this is what I read

Full statement from Trump adviser Mike Waltz on the situation in Ukraine and preparations for talks with Putin.

“So, the preparations are well underway, but looking back, John, it’s striking to me how many people have changed their position since the president was elected — from unconditional support and willingness to finance a war for as long as it takes, whether it’s months or years or decades, despite the fact that the conflict has turned into a meat grinder of resources and people in the style of World War I with the consequences of World War III — to the current situation, where even President Zelenskyy, walking into a room in Paris, says: “I am ready to work with you to end this war.” So let’s end it fairly, responsibly, with a future for Ukraine, but let’s end it so that the whole world can move on.

From President Trump’s perspective, you can’t make a deal unless you have some kind of dialogue and relationship with the other side [Russia - Ed.], and we will establish that in the coming months. There is no precise framework for this yet, we are working on it, but I expect at least a phone call in the coming days or weeks. That will be a step, and we will move on.

One more thing: we need to stabilize the situation on the battlefield. One of the issues we will raise with the Ukrainians is the real problems with the military force. Their draft age is now 25, not 18, and I think many people do not realize that Ukraine could mobilize hundreds of thousands of new soldiers. So when we hear about problems with morale or difficulties on the front lines, we say: “Look, if the Ukrainians are asking the whole world to support democracy, they themselves must be fully committed to this cause.”

They have certainly shown incredible courage and taken a noble and steadfast stand, but we need these problems with the lack of people to be solved. It is not just about ammunition, weapons, or new financial injections. It is important to stabilize the front lines so that we can begin to work toward some kind of settlement.

QUESTION: President Trump has certainly said that he could end the war before he takes office. I think that is no longer realistic, with only eight days left until his inauguration. What is the realistic timeline for at least a ceasefire in Ukraine?

We would like to see a ceasefire at any moment, any day. I think that would be an incredibly positive first step on both sides that would allow us to begin to develop a framework for some kind of diplomatic solution.

Everyone understands that this has to end diplomatically. I just don’t think it is realistic to say that we can drive every Russian soldier out of every inch of Ukrainian territory. Even Crimea – President Trump has acknowledged that reality, and I think it is a huge step forward that the world is beginning to acknowledge that reality.

Now we need to move on. How do we stop this conflict and prevent it from escalating to a level that will involve the entire world? We are already seeing North Korea, we are hearing tense statements from South Korea. This conflict could expand, and we must not allow that to happen."

Yeah. This is totally crazy.

1. The battlefield situation is not gonna get stabilized by feeding raw and untrained 18 years into the front lines as the Russian military just keeps expanding and getting stronger.

2. There's not gonna be a ceasefire as long as the US is supplying Ukraine with munitions. The Russians flat out don't trust us--they'd be crazy to do so.

3. A continuing war will deplete the US and be an anchor around Trump's neck.

4. This could almost have been spoken by Blinken or Sullivan.

yes. The Ukrainian situation will not get better. The only thing that can save them is NATO intervention. The sad part of this is the Kagans, BOJOs and Blinkens of this world will continue to live full, opulent lives while the Average Ukie, is either dead, wounded, or living in post Apocalyptic poverty

Or told no. Period. The vacant lot has now become home to the endangered snail darter. And by the way, there is an inflated bill from the county for cleanup and removal of debri.

I don't doubt that many of the radical leftists in the legislature would regard a return to a state of nature or a pre-development stage as a plus, and would block any changes that would make rebuilding easier.

In keeping with the theme of multipolarity between the US and Russia, and China and India and ... Alistair Crooke had an interesting meditation linked from Lew Rockwell. https://www.lewrockwell.com/2025/01/no_author/can-trump-save-america-from-itself/

He notes that America is ill-prepared to retreat from a foreign policy driven by a maximalist vision to bring liberal democracy to all peoples. (America is barely a nation anymore; we are a community of identities at best. Unit consumers. With a military.) At the same time, the same foreign policy establishment which brought us e.g. the Project for a New American Century in the 90s had already subscribed to the real goal of a post-national techno-elite cooperating to govern all peoples e.g. the Trilateral Commission in the 70s. Let people identify as they will or they must, leave national boundaries as they are, but everyone is going to be governed by one body of elites who agree. Their power will be exercised through international banks and multinational corporations.

In this view, it seems like wars are preliminary to a higher settlement that reaches beyond mere security architectures. Wars are what people expect to see if nations exist and compete in a multipolar world that changes over time. But the planned interoperability of CBDCs and associated national Digital IDs will consolidate a new unipolar governance that is supranational. Multipolarity is not freedom if your elites are cooperating with their elites at a higher level... I'm locked down in my country, you are locked down in your country, we are at peace? I like the algorithm my elite uses to calculate my social credit score, it keeps me safe from terror, there was no other way to achieve peace? https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2025/01/the-propaganda-push-for-digital-identity-in-uk-goes-into-overdrive.html
