Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is my understanding of what happened to precipitate the downfall of McCarthy and the election of Johnson. McCarthy made a variety of commitments in order to get the votes he needed to be elected Speaker. One of those commitments was that there would be no blanket Continuing Resolutions (CR)—spending bills would be voted on in separate categories. Now, typically, a Speaker will not bring a bill up for a vote unless a majority of his party is on board with it. However, when it came time to send more money to Ukraine, McCarty realized that he did not have a majority of Republicans on board. To get around his own party’s majority, he violated his commitment and bundled the Ukraine aid into a CR that was then passed with the help of Dems—over the heads of the majority of Republicans.
I'm going to wait and see how Johnson measures up. However, my suspicious nature needs to be reassured that his getting a unanimous vote is perfectly normal.
I'm genuinely grateful to Johnson for giving this treasonous creep a rough time. However, is it really bring the heat? These leftists apparatchiks are just like their political masters: Trojan horses. They are groomed and put in power to cause as much damage as possible. They know that they will get the occasional public grilling, but not much worse. They also know that when they have completed their "task" of destroying the part of the US organism under their jurisdiction, they can then shuffle off to a well-earnt sinecure. Just ask Jacinda Arden. Sorry to sound cynical, but we are going to have to go beyond public slugfests like this if things are going to change.
Valid point. This is clearly only an interim step....there is value in this questioning alerting the electorate about the attack on Free Speech. In addition, using a sports analogy, you can only play the teams on your schedule. This opportunity was there, and Johnson performed well.
The broader changes require control of all three branches of the Fed Gov't by a team committed to deep (police) state destruction. This certainly feels like a battle that's been won, but the outcome of the war is not resolved.
I don't really feel hopeless, IJM. It's just that I don't see much hope via politics. It's hard to deny that we seem to be in some kind of Fourth Turning scenario. The familiar landscape will change dramatically, but with luck, something better will emerge from it.
Correct. McCarthy acted really tough for a few weeks after winning the speakership, and then reverted to type. The Senate continuing resolution bill ends on Nov 17th. Let's see what Johnson does after that.
I don't think Zhou is going to run again. They'll pull a just-in-time switcheroo; that's why we see Gavin Noisome's shadow campaign warming up. But his owners / handlers will squeeze every last drop of utility from him before throwing him under the bus.
Keep in mind our Chnese supported Apple, Hollywood, and the NBA are all major Chinese partners and they are big biz in CA. This might be one aspect of his trip and ye, positioning is what lizards like Newsome do.
Grusome and Bidet know where the money is - both are bought and paid for by Xi. Seems the Dems can’t get in the WH without foreign influence, and, true to form, that’s exactly what they accused Trump of. Plus ça change…
He’s on record as an “election denier.” Obviously an insurrectionist and threat to their democracy. The doj goons are probably furiously drawing up the indictments at this very moment.

Hopefully new Speaker Mike Johnson will be bringing the heat like this everyday.

I don't believe that a political solution is possible for America's (and Europe's) woes. The cultural rot is too deep. However, I'd love to be wrong.
I agree that things are grim and the hour is late. However, there is always hope.

We should definitely savour any real victories we gain. And I forgot to give due praise to Matt Gaetz. He seems to be a GOPer who can talk AND fight.

I observed that about McCarthy. I was impressed, at first.
Unbundling spending bills where allow for everyone’s vote to be reflected for their constituents.
Separately I do envision some Ukraine spending bill coming forward somewhere well south of $61B in the future.
Controls, audits should be standard practice although I realize this was never agreed to by a majority.

Why is Governor hair gel meeting with chairman Xi? That’s all you need to know…
He's building "presidential stature"
Gruesome was with xi today. Wonder what that was all about.

Future appeasement to unite Taiwan with the mother ship through $$$ donations to Captain Chaos’ war chest.

As we speak, a soccer mum in LA is saying, "Hey, isn't that the guy that molested me in 2nd grade?"
probably = most certainly!
