Kim Dotcom appears to have a good handle on developments, IMO, and Valtersson also:

I've been unsure what really is the true cause for Prigozhin's uprising. But I'm more and more convinced that it's not an Maskirovka to fool the UkrAF. It is a real power play action by Prigozhin. An action fueled by overconfidence and a belief he was untouchable. But he has gone too far now and there's no turning back. The Russian leadership underestimated Ukrainian resolve and capability in February 2022, Prigozhin might have done the same mistake now.
This time he has gone against Putin’s open demand to abort the "uprising " and accept responsibility for his actions. Instead he sent an convoy of 170 technical vehicles and trucks towards Moscow. That's an open challenge to Kremlin which is unacceptable. I believe the only reason the convoy hasn't been wiped out is a reluctance among the leadership I Moscow to kill many of their own.
Let's see how it all ends, but nobody in Kremlin, Ru MoD or RuAF will let Prigozhin keep control of PMC Wagner after this. He will be lucky if he still are alive in one weeks time. The uprising might just melt away the coming days or have a bloody end if a desperate Prigozhin refuse to surrender.

has a good analysis of the background to the uprising.
In addition Mercouris at The Duran makes some sensible observations regarding the damage that Prigozhin has been allowed to inflict. This isn’t a “psyop” or weird multi-dimensional chess. However, this has the potential to damage Russia’s hard won international standing. Mercouris blames the military leadership for tolerating Prigozhin’s longstanding insubordination—this needs to be dealt with swiftly and decisively. Internal gang-style power bases can’t be tolerated.
