If you understand the nature of Democrat politics, specifically if you have understood this was a long-ago-decided replacement strategy, then you will see how the Pelosi group positioned Gavin Newsom for this series of events.
The DNC controls the mechanisms. The first-round ballot will include too many names for any single candidate to emerge the victor. The super delegates, the ones who really are the party power brokers, will then make their decisions.
Gavin Newsom has been playing the loyal Democrat supporter of Biden, specifically because he knew this moment was coming. Every move was gaming and pretending. It is more than likely that Newsom will exit as the consensus candidate in second, perhaps third round.
It was always going to happen this way.
We’ll see how this goes. IMO, leaving Zhou in the WH is probably a bad idea—a reminder to the nation that they’ve been snookered for years.

While that is an interesting theory on Newsom. You’re leaving out the elephant in the room that is Kamala Harris. Harris is going to expect support for the nomination only because she is a woman and she is the vice president and that cannot be ignored. If she has passed over, then the backlash and the absolute mendacity and the hypocrisy of the Democrat party will be stripped, bare for the world to see.
I can’t believe any reputable candidate, would want to be at the top of the democrat ticket this election cycle, because if they lose and loose badly, then they’re prospects for ever being a presidential nominee again is over. The smart play for the Democrats is to put Harris up and let her run. Concentrate on the downstream elections and just let the top of the ticket go. They just cannot ignore and bypass Kamala Harris.
