Disappointing editorial by Walter Russell Mead. His lack of expertise on the Ukraine surprises me. I used to read him all the time. But I first soured on him when he had an editorial on Taiwan that was also disappointing. His Jacksonian, Hamilton, Wilson, Jefferson model is a great guide for us politics.
Davis hits it. Also, I agree with your suggestion about the geography, Mark. Thanks for all of the info in support of that conclusion.
It seems obvious that the east and west of the Ukraine are culturally and politically different from one another. Which tells me that peace is dependent on them being separated from one another politically. The question remains as to the form of that. If the east is annexed by Russia, what will be the status of the west? It appears the Russians will not be happy until all anti-Russian foreign influences are expunged from it. That means it becomes a Russian client and buffer state controlled politically by Russia. I see no other possibility and now believe the Russians will force that.
And if the Poles and the U.S. keep sending NATO forces into the rump Ukraine? Bad, bad news for all of us. All that said I feel sorry for the Ukrainian people who have hoped in vain to forge common economic and cultural ties with the west and now suffer. They have been mislead for many years. And it wasn't by Putin.
Your welcome. There's another news item out, that the UK is sending tanks to ... Estonia? That's just not serious. Our rulers are living in a weird globalist dream world where all that matters is gestures.
Oh boy. Not serious and yet I am starting to get flashbacks of Sarajevo 1914. I hope not but lots of people didn't see that one coming and there are lots of reasons the politicians should see this one coming. Tinder meet fire. Are the globalists and purveyors of the "liberal world order" really willing to blow everything up to get their way?
I am not even close to being up to speed on this Ukraine deal. I worry who controls our nuclear football, and I now read that the US has more than a dozen bio weapon labs in Ukraine and seems to be a central money laundering location for our political elites. Confusing information and I don’t know what to believe.
Technically those labs aren't "weapons" labs. They're part of the Biological Threat Reduction Program--I think Dr. Malone was associated with that program. Defense/Offense in these areas can be very hard to distinguish.
Poland is going to have to live next door to a Russia that will emerge from this in a strengthened position. What benefit does Poland get from angering Russia in this way? The US will be shown to be an untrustworthy partner, despite having provided Poland with advanced weaponry. But that weaponry will not be adequate to Russia's new hypersonic missiles. Better to have kept a lower profile and look out for its own interests rather than supporting an inept US admin. Same is even more true for the Baltic countries.
What's to explain? US imports Russian energy to the Northeast because US environmentalists won't build pipelines from the energy producing parts of the US and because the Jones Act would require sea transport of US energy in US built ships--far too expensive for our tastes. Thus:
I don't know about you, but when I'm a guest in someone's home, I try to act with some courtesy. YMMV. Not that Mark Wauck needs any support from me..., however dude--you are harshing my mellow.
What's stupid about Maria's statements is that she's presenting "grabbing territory" as Putin's motivation. Neither I nor Goldman are wrong about Putin's motivations--as he has been saying since 2007 at Munich he's looking for solid security arrangements that recognize the interests of all parties. He also set out a clear demand that he stated would abort military action--a clear affirmation that Ukraine would not enter NATO. What I--and others--was wrong about was underestimating the stupidity of our rulers in failing to take Putin seriously.
I explained that the notion that this invasion was intended as a "land grab" is what I called stupid. But perhaps you're too stupid to acknowledge that.
I concur, everybody hates Nixon but did anybody ever read his book, "The Real War?" It is the most concise primer on Foreign Policy and why it matters but it's more fun to hate him. GW holds some blame here as well. So let me add I'm grateful to have come across Mr. Wauck's page, it has proven to be a good source.

Yes, they are: this is an existential fight.

This seems to me to be a very bad idea for Poland "going forward", as they say:

A VERY, VERY bad idea indeed! The knuckleheaded, ignoramus powers that be are all about escalation, creating an Article 5 situation is their goal.
Can you explain this regarding Poland a bit more?

Humble enough?
The US is not a serious country, which puts us at a serious disadvantage in dealing with a serious guy like Putin.

Your turn to be humble.

Not a Russophile at all. As I've said before, it's about being smart--and our elite isn't demonstrating much in the way of smarts.
I speak Polish and used to sing in a Ukrainian choir. Does that clarify things? :-)
