With all the talk of sanctions, don’t forget that Putin has made very clear that he will impost counter sanctions. He has kept his word so far. And has assured the West that he isn’t bluffing. Meanwhile the Establishment grasp on reality seems tenuous:

He spread to the NYT Comey’s personal memos on private conversations with President Trump. He started Lawfare, and recruited all of the former Dem Big Shots who were fired from the FBI, etc. He is a self-promoting, self-reverential, very evil little guy.
The Brookings Institute? Next they will put out a white paper professing that we don’t need fossil fuels what with electric cars, wind and solar (or am I too late with that?)

Truly, I believe it is not just a welcome distraction from domestic problems. I believe the ultimate intent is to remove Putin from the leadership of Russia, one way or another. It truly is a fight for their "New World Order" and Putin is seen as an obstacle to that. The other rationales, as Sundance would put it, are "chaff and countermeasures."
