Actually 4; my response is; Yes they thought they had public interests in mind based on their decades old power; Hegemony; How real an awakening will be evident when a new gov't and Prime Minister is chosen. Time will tell.

A friend of mine who worked most of his life in the US Embassy in the Hague retired to Ireland about two years ago. He found the referendum results mystifying lol.
I get her argument that democracy is "at best an illusion," an "instrument of control" because you "think you have a vote" when you really don't. And yet, sometimes ... I don't have an answer.
Mark, perhaps that is the point: in Globalism (which never encompassed the East), we were all taught that we had to participate and that this meant something: TELEVISION - you have a choice! But now that we are no longer in that paradigm, we have gone DIGITAL, which destroys rather than unites, we start to see the past as it actually was, and less of the fantasy. Its Memory. We tend to “short” memory, so Covid is a benchmark, or the obvious attempt to do something that we could see was utterly out of place.
But her hinting at concerns over the humans, is what is important here. We now live in a world of robots, artificial souls and decisions. This will force every single person in the West to do what they have not done in their lifetimes: what about the humans. She is talking about a place with a Catholic culture background, so that discussion is more obvious.
As for democracy: who wins makes absolutely no difference (there is no one thinking/talking about robots and globalism being dead and decline and what to do to rebuild a moral superstructure from the ground up). But the process does matter, which is what she is talking about.
What is missing: recognizing that there are no powers that be in control of anything. There are no plans in the West. No elites. Zip. Nada. Aimless for now. Contra the East (China has what we term the - Chinese Operating System - and places like India and Russia are fully embracing their spiritual backgrounds). Until the West recognizes that Robots (and those promoting them) are the fundamental change…we will continue to get these referendums, and talk around things…
