The NYT is reporting that the US is providing targeting information to Ukraine to enable Ukraine to kill high level Russian military personnel, and possibly command and control type centers (which the Russians move frequently). To me, this is the kind of activity that could really blow up in our collective face, as a country. It’s also disturbing that this is being done without the knowledge of the American people, by and large. I mean, this isn’t ISIS or al Qaeda we’re talking about. Russia is a country with highly advanced military capabilities, for some of which (nuclear capable hypersonic missiles) we have no counter measures. How confident are you that the Neocons ruling our country can be trusted to only do smart things? Their track record isn’t good.
NEW: The US has provided intelligence that has helped Ukrainians target and kill many of the Russian generals who have died in action in the Ukraine war, according to senior American officials. w/ @helenecooper & @EricSchmittNYT
U.S. Intelligence Is Helping Ukraine Kill Russian Generals, Officials SayTargeting assistance is part of a classified effort by the Biden administration to provide real-time battlefield intelligence to Ukraine.https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/04/us/politics/russia-generals-killed-ukraine.html
The United States has focused on providing the location and other details about the Russian military’s mobile headquarters, which relocate frequently.
Ukrainian officials have combined that geographic information with their own intelligence — including intercepted communications — to conduct artillery strikes and other attacks that have killed Russian officers.
The targeting help is part of a classified effort by the Biden administration to provide real-time battlefield intelligence to Ukraine. That intelligence also includes anticipated Russian troop movements gleaned from recent American assessments of Moscow’s secret battle plan.
Not all the strikes have been carried out with American intelligence. A strike over the weekend at a location in eastern Ukraine where Gen. Valery Gerasimov, Russia’s highest-ranking uniformed officer, had visited was not aided by American intelligence.
Woops!
When you are providing intel that is helping to target and degrade the upper levels of another country’s military command structure, seems that the targeted country might take it personally.
Might even look at it as an act of war.
I’m sure I’m probably wrong though, if the Russian’s started targeting and killing U.S. generals, we’d probably just shake it off.
Naw, can’t see anyway this thing could go south.
Woops! and the mushroom cloud are dramatic, but wouldn't this green light the Russians to do what they could to downgrade our military, and even our civilian infrastructure with cyber warfare and other surreptitious strikes, not claiming responsibility of course. I have the impression that our top brass are not all that bright. Things have gotten so political in Washington lately.
