Thanks for sharing these thoughts; it always makes me thinkh about how complex AI's future can get. Do you think focusing on transparent, open-source AI development could help mitigate some of these concerns around control?

It seems like this debate about whether or not there mingt be malinvestment in data centers (lol), and on whether there might be creative accounting at NVDA (lol) leaves out a whole other reality check. Intentionally? What about Deepseek as well as the NEXT Deepseek that we haven't even heard of yet? More efficient ways to do AI, cheaper and more efficient "chips", etc.

I read recently that most small companies that are implementing AI are actually using Deepseek which is practically free, works almost as well as domestic services, and is open source.

This reminds of of dinosaurs and comets. Also of an old science fiction story where some astronauts who traveled to a distant star finally arrived and wake up and find a thriving human civilization there....faster than light was developed after they started their voyage.

Thanks for the update and review. Excellent. For those who want to learn more about all things AI, I strongly recommend looking at Ed Zitron's website "wheresyoured.at". He provides a great deal of free research and also has paid material (I am a subscriber and he charges about $70/year and frequently offers discounts). Given the amount of material he produces on a weekly basis, I don't think that the guy sleeps. His most recent piece (partially paywalled) ran to nearly 18,000 words.

Shanaka's article is a good recap but many of the issues cited are well known. The issue on vendor financing is widely known. The interlocking "i'll invest in your company and you'll buy my products" is widely known. The issue around depreciation is widely known. Now what do I mean by widely known? I know about it and I'm just a typical investor. I don't work for a hedge fund or investment bank or anything similar. I read the typical websites, blogs, etc. So I have no special inside information and I've known about most of the issues cited for some time.

The depreciation issue is interesting; IRS guidelines generally allow 5 years for IT equipment but GAAP reporting a company can select a different useful life as long as it's consistent and reasonable. Burry is right but I don't believe for one second that savvy analysts haven't accounted for this in their models. NVDA stock price has been bouncing around for the last four months; it's basically back where it was in July. So with NVDA last week, I think it was a simple "buy the rumor, sell the news" reaction.

There's a famous Hemingway character's statement about how he went bankrupt: gradually and then suddenly. With AI (as an investment, not as a technology), I think that people are gradually understanding that the investment hype will never happen on the timeline forecast. There aren't enough experienced people to build the data centers in the timeline that's been proposed; there isn't enough electricity (MSFT is going to try to restart Three Mile Island - you kids can google what it is, was, and may be again); there aren't enough real resources to do everything that's proposed. I think that people are beginning to realize (and adjust investments accordingly) that it's not going to play out as anticipated. I lived through the dot com bubble and while the internet has turned out to be as transformative as thought, I also remember asking the question in 1997 "but how do you make money"? That's been figured out, but it sure wasn't apparent then.

If you look past the hype, the technology sector generally is not great based on current stock prices. I track trending indicators for about 100 major companies in the sector and completed my regular review last week. 15 of the 100 have a positive stock price trend in the past few months and only 3 of the 15 are in what I would consider a strong positive price trend. Most are flat or declining.

And since this is the first comment I've made discussing specific stocks, nothing I say is or should be considered investment advice and by no means take any action based on any comment I make.

AI has two main vulnerabilities:

1. It needs to be plugged in. It needs an external electrical power source to run. It is not a self contained system.

2. The data centers that house “AI” are connected to each other and to the rest of the Al Gore’s inter-web through cables. Fiber optic cables. Even your wireless cell phone is ultimately connected somewhere and somehow by a fiber optic cable link.

The power cables and fiber cables themselves are vulnerable to sabotage, vandalism, or outright purposeful damage. They are not hardened facilities the whole distance and route.

If enough people, in enough places, get fed up and tired of the AI dystopia in the future, the system can be brought crashing down with relatively low tech physical methods. The pitch fork and torch crowd will not be as powerless as the elite may want to believe.

In NE England what was going to be a massive plant to manufacture batteries for electric cars, which kinda went quiet then fizzled out, is now going to be a massive new data centre much like the one Susan describes. I am emphasising "going to be" because of the strong likelihood it will never happen.

Some short-term construction jobs would be possible, not several thousand though. my older son has been doing contract electrical installs in similar sites further south. These are all, so far, large empty structures that might host acres of server racks. They're all in coastal areas or estuarine locations because yes, those servers run very hot. The thermal issue was supposedly solved one year ago, having badly dented nVidia share values, and cancellation of orders. (They redesigned the server racks and upped the specification for water consumption iirc but the GPUs are still out there for the time being.)

There are several factors that would indicate that AI at this point is overblown and money pit. I don’t see how the investment being talked about in the two dollar range or more is going to produce the revenue and profits needed to justify the investment.

One of the biggest problems I see is the rush to build all of these huge AI data centers, which will take years to come to fruition, if it all.

The amount of money that is going to have to be invested in power generation alone is going to be in tens of billions of dollars. If you started right now, it would be five or six years or longer before those power generators come online.

The other component is the amount of water and other things that are going to be needed to keep those AI data centers running cool for the computers to work.

I live in Arkansas and south of me in Louisiana. They’re talking about one of these data centers that was going to have to have at least 1,000,000 gallons of water a day for the purpose of keeping the Center running cool . Water is a resource that cannot be squandered at this point and certainly not to the extent of millions of gallons of water a day for AI data centers when we need that water for farming as well as for personal needs.

Where is the investment money going to come from for the utility to expand? For 30 years they’ve just been running in place replacing what they needed to not planning for the future. The energy needs for the AI programs are enormous and right now. China has beat us on that alone.

So put me in the camp of the cynics and skeptics as far as the promises of AI are for the future.
