The talk today is still largely about the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in Ukraine. While many analysts that I follow believe that the balance of probabilities point towards Ukraine as the perpetrator, even pro-Russian analysts—including Simplicius the Thinker—acknowledge that complicating factors prevent drawing any firm conclusion.
If the definition of 'insanity' is doing the same things over and over but expecting a different result, then this push toward China certainly fits.
Multiple U.S. administrations have committed virtually the same disastrous miscalculations - really starting with Vietnam. The same set of mistakes carry through Kosovo, Afganistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and now Ukraine (Russia).
The U.S. has repeatedly* overestimated the effectiveness of their air power, underestimated the willingness of the targeted governments - and their populations - to fight for their homelands and have routinely demonized opposing political leaders making negotiated settlements more difficult if not impossible.
Their playbook is sadly predictable and tired yet still lethal.
Totally OT, but some good news from Canada and the long term results of the glorious trucker convoy. I'd been left at the police & banking crackdowns. Interesting how little news came out beyond that, huh?
I haven't followed the Ukraine news for a while (mental health break!) but clocking back in, nothing seems to have changed. To play devil's advocate, it seems to me that maybe Russia isn't playing some kind of deep war 4D chess, but is bogged down. What does the team think?
I, too, have been taking a bit of a break from being driven insane by the blase attitude in the media/public about some monumentally-disturbing sh!t going on. I appreciate Mark's and Simplicius' judiciousness in not immediately assigning blame on the dam and, to the fullest extent it might be plausible not to do so, this ammonia release.
I think the strongest indicator that the Ukes are behind this one is the usual media suspects' reaction. When this story first broke 48 hours or so ago, Reuters and the rest were all screaming from the mountaintops that the evil Russians had bombed this pipeline. That take dried up quickly and the story went silent. Absent some reasonable indications that the Ukes were behind this, you could bet that they'd still be falling about themselves, all verklempt over Russian war crimes.
Crazy part is that, if unleashed by the Ukes in an attempt to thwart enemy troops, how does this differ substantially from what the Tommies suffered at Ypres and elsewhere over a century ago? War crimes are, in fact, war crimes, no matter the perpetrator or victim.
Someone should ask Greta how she feeeelz about the ecological destruction of Ukraine. And then compare it to the use of fossil fuels, which has lately been proven to be almost a non-factor with regard to global climate. Does she love the planet or not? Curious to know.

Well said.

I often read complaints on the line of "nothing will change." Never believe it.

Latest news is that a Norwegian seismic institute is reporting an explosion occurred at the dam. Of course that doesn't say who caused it.

I'm sure she can't sleep at night worrying over this
Absolutely! Where is the outrage?!
We the people of “their democracy” aren’t even a consideration when calculating prices to be paid.
