I wonder where the colonel gets his info from. As you say, Mark, he seems to have inside sources - probably from his past work in the Pentagon. McGregor also said in the interview that the Pentagon, WH and all the neocons know what's coming too but have absolutely no solutions apart from bumping up weapons supplies to the Ukies. Unless Putin throws it away or the oil price caps really do start to work (yeah, I know), then this is shaping up to be one of the greatest foreign policy disasters since WW1.

And all the while, Zelenskiy's phoning it in from Tel Aviv. This war has given his net worth a big boost.

I just hope it's over quickly. The Ukrainian people should never have had to suffer like this. There were so many opportunities to de-escalate. The whole thing is such a shame. A shame on our State Department and the whole Administration, but above all the IC who runs this scandalous death machine.

Wonder if they pulled Zhukov, Koniev or Rokossovski out of mothballs? I feel for the average Ukie grunt out there. The Mercs? Maybe we’ll intentioned but they should have read some history books.

I will readily grant that Macgregor presents an oversimplified and misleading view of Taiwanese politics. However, you present a misleading view of what Macgregor said. He certainly never said that Taiwan is "an election away" from reunification. IMO his larger point is that Americans tend to think that the residents of Taiwan are, in the majority, yearning for status as an independent nation. That is, at best, as oversimplified as Macgregor's statements. It is also true that among DPP voters there are favorable views of Japan and Japanese culture, for historical reasons.

1. "The new KMT leader, Eric Chu, is described as ‘China-friendly’ but no-one should infer from this that he desires rule by the PRC"

Here you "clearly imply" that Macgregor thinks Chu "desires rule by the PRC." He doesn't say that. What Macgregor is talking about is the economic fact that Taiwan and China are locked in economic co-dependency (FP). In actual fact neither KMT nor DPP want to change that to attain real independence, no matter what they may say. Beijing tolerates this and will continue to tolerate it because it's to their advantage as well.

2. "having favourable views of Japan and wishing close relations with that country does not warrant being haphazardly labelled ‘pro-Japanese’."

Macgregor doesn't apply that label "haphazardly"--you're wrong and misleading again. He specifically attributes the favorable views toward Japan among Taiwanese who are not descended from Mainland refugees--70% or more of the total population--to "historical" reasons. He's right, and that's not haphazard. Anyone can do some searches and discover that this is all well known, and that other Chinese are baffled by this pro-Japanese sentiment.

True, Texas, but it's not just about systems and structures; it's about what kind of people you have behind the trigger. Most modern people in the US and Europe don't seem tough enough to face down a powerful enemy as our grandfathers did.

I don't want Ukrainians to die, but I don't want Americans to die in Ukraine either. Nor do I want our treasury to be ransacked, our weapons stockpiles to be depleted all to cover for at least eight years of American political corruption run out of the offices of the VPOTUS and POTUS.

After what we have seen happen in US elections, there is likely no blame to be ascribed to the Ukrainian civilians. Like us, they are pawns. Like us they seem to be well armed, however, and could maybe shorten Zelensky's term in office?

Citing McGregor, the original SMO aimed just to free the ethnic Russian areas, hoping that this would bring Kiev to its senses. That failed, so he thinks that the Russians will now take the whole country. They must know that if they just stick to the Donbas, within a year or two, the same situation will happen again: Ukie neo-Nazis shelling the area and killing Russians.

I was looking at images from Bakhmut the other day. It looked like a scene from WW1. The place has been hit by thousands of shells. I don't think most in the West realise the scale of the combat in this war.
