Mark,

That meeting with Germany's Defense Minister was not to have occurred until this week. Here is the latest I've found:

https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/3270190/secretary-of-defense-chairman-of-the-joint-chiefs-travel-to-germany-for-ukraine/

"Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III will travel to Ramstein Air Base, Germany, to conduct an in-person meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group on January 20. While there, Secretary Austin will be joined by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley. This will be the eighth meeting of the UDCG and the fifth in-person session since the international group was formed in April. They will join ministers of defense and chiefs of defense from nearly 50 nations from around the world to discuss Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, and the continued close coordination to provide the Ukrainian people with the means necessary to defend their sovereign territory."

Ah, Thanks. But this looks like a different meeting? The notice I saw seemed to refer to a one and one meet, specific to Germany and US.

U.S., German defence ministers discuss tanks for Ukraine amid differences

"BERLIN, Jan 19 (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met Germany's new Defence Minister Boris Pistorius on Thursday to press Berlin to allow the transfer of German-made tanks to Ukraine, U.S. officials said, as the two allies remained at loggerheads over the issue.

Germany will allow German-made tanks to be sent to Ukraine to help its defence against Russia if the United States agrees to send its own tanks, a German government source told Reuters. ..."

Ground isn’t frozen yet. February for sure

I'm thinking that this year, "frozen ground" will be at best a very transitory event in Ukraine.

Looking at the 14 day forecast for Kiev, tomorrow is supposed to hit 50°F, and daily highs at or above freezing for the next two weeks.

Sure, the ground can get colder in Feb, but not for very long before the mud season begins.

Daylight (warming) is increasing rapidly, several minutes each day.

Generally, Kiev has been warmer all through the winter than we are here in south Michigan. When I walk my pups in the morning, even if there has a sharp drop into the 20s, the ground is still spongy.

Aside from the Christmas Cold Blast of 2022, the winter here has been unusually moderate. So too, I think, in Ukraine.

Its anyone's guess what Ukraine winds up with. I can see a scenario where DC decides to go for broke - sends 100 Abrams, which triggers 100 Leopards, 50 Challengers, and then all the support equipment that needs to go with it. It is near-as-makes-no-difference direct NATO involvement in the war. Russia has smashed 2, or 3, armies now, and will need to destroy a 4th

Their approach makes me wonder though. I would have thought that launching their offensives would make more sense sooner rather than later. The more time passes, the more that NATO can send stuff over and train. We are in mid-winter now, and the next mud season is around the corner.

As I mentioned below, timing is everything. As an armchair general, I would think the same as you. But maybe Stavka is waiting to see if it can lure in even more Western military merchandise, destroy it and leave Nato's cupboard bare. As you say, it will just be another army destroyed.

As it turns out, it seems a fairly sizeable amount of equipment is going to make its way to Ukraine, as announced today. Hundreds of tanks, armored vehicles, the works.

Either Russia is REALLY good at destroying everything, or I'm missing something.

Yes, they're REALLY good at destroying that stuff. Do not expect that "stuff" to show up all at once or quickly. Logistics of moving these things--and support for them--many hundreds of miles are not simple. We may also now see much more aggressive Russian interdiction.

As I count it, only 28 MBTs. The other vehicles are outgunned and out armored by Russian vehicles. 105mm howitzers, to take on Russian 152mm? It's a total mixtum gatherum.

Expand full comment

I wonder how this will affect the timing of the Russian offensive (if there's going to be one)? I suspected that one of the reasons for the delay was that the Russians wanted to destroy as much Western equipment as possible, thereby depleting Nato as well as the Ukrainians. They must have been salivating at destroying Europe's whole MBT fleet, and maybe a large slice of Abrams.

"Clearly many European countries are resigned to Ukraine’s defeat and would very much like to limit their own losses, especially economic losses."

Which may explain the British decision to send Challenger 2 tanks, but only a "squadron" In British army usage a tank squadron is a company. I thought that was 16 tanks, but the report I saw says they are only sending 14.

Now Britain has a lot of unused Challenger 2s as budget cuts have nearly eliminated heavy armor from their ground forces altogether. Given the need for horses for the Guard ceremonials at Buckingham palace, the British army now has more horses than main battle tanks.

My speculation is that the British now think that Ukraine is going down in the fairly near future. Rather than publicly admit this, or perhaps to get the Yanks off their case, they are sending a token number of tanks. This is speculation, but it is the best theory I can come up with.

Same with the Patriot missiles. This sounded like big stuff when first announced. Until they said only one or two units would be going. It's all face-saving posturing.

Who benefits from Biden being gone? I believe when we start looking at it from that angle we'll get a better idea of who was behind this. None of the parties you mentioned actually benefit from getting rid of Biden, except maybe Kookala. But her issues are so manifest she'd be deep sixed long before she actually took office so even if this were a dumb move by her supporters, it wouldn't have gotten any press. My theory is Trump made sure Biden won and will also decide when Biden exits stage left. Is that now?

A thought I neglected to address earlier about Germany and it's having found a 'way out' of the tank-provision dilemma it was in... I noted previously that Germany may be recognizing the joining with President Biden (and handlers) may have been a significant error. What will become the tipping-point excuse to withdraw support completely and look out for it's own populace's welfare? Destroying the Nordstream pipeline may result in many thousands of deaths from weather and food shortages. Yes, heat and fertilizer are specifically IMPORTANT NG products... I'll note life-providing/saving and Germany may be forced to respond to that reality. I do believe, reality will one day again rule sound choices and decisions. One day... Blessings to all! (WRH)

I think the suffering will have to be existential, Wayne, to overcome the delusion and mass hypnosis. You mention the NS debacle. The US destroyed that and the Germans hardly raised a whisper! That's how far gone they are. And the rest of Europe isn't far behind. Unfortunately, this kind of crazy is only cured, if at all, by horrible personal suffering. Maybe with the economic situation and mass vax deaths we are going to get that.

Hey S'21 (I guess I'm just too lazy to type it all out, hope you're not offended!

Sadly, I pray for senses to return but history (Hmmm, this blog is about that...) seems to depict, as you've described, cure by horrible suffrage. The 20th century saw upwards of 200 MILLION lives taken - I've described as by the various 'isms' (sans capitalism which has saved many more). Many who were going along to get along. You mention maybe we will see learning regarding the Vax debacle, yet I still see Masked, solo car drivers. Stupid ol' Idahoans (as I am, Idahoan and much too stupid at times) initially drank some kook aid, for instance my church sermons were recorded by our Pastor in an empty sanctuary, made available online-for 6 weeks before returning, masked and spaced, to gather in person. Some resisted and were arrested for unlawful Covid assembly, outside. yes in Idaho a pretty red state (with pockets of 'blue resistance'). I'm 4 years retired and truly am concerned for my wife and my plans-I lived through the 70's and saw my aged uncles/aunts/grandparents suffer while not understanding (after all, I was employed with pay raises...) I started 1972 @ $2/ hour; entered the military at $321/ month and did fine. In 1980 I earned $12/hour and, newly married, was broke. Now, inflation and recession again come into my life - with arguably a far worse situation with super-premium fuel of the Fed and Gov't policies producing 80% of the M2 money supply in around 3 years... As a retired truck driver I probably ain't 'qualified' but that one element alone seems about as inflation-intense a prospect possible. I'll add our 31+ trillion $ debt now vs 1 Trillion $ in 1980 makes it a diesel/O2 mix (chemistry also is not my gig), aka Oklahoma in a Uhaul truck but now riding a Supertanker... Okay, my illustrations are what they are but my fear, I think, is kinda explained therein.

Really, I wonder, just what will this world look like (not w/Biden's nuclear war) when reality truly hits. the Davos wish-list might get a lot done on it when perhaps a billion suffer/die of starvation. And there are billions which will be at risk. War is a common 'fix' when the politics have failed. Talk about diversion techniques! Makes the speculation of the Vett-Gate papers as distractions amateur hour for 5 year olds...

Blessings kind sir, I wish you and your loved ones the absolute best! (WRH)

Agreed, Wayne, and same to you and yours! There's a lot that can go wrong and we seem to be on the edge of a lot of precipices. I'm a few years younger but I worry too - not so much for myself, but for my kids. However, I think there's hope too. Russia holding out might drag down the globalists. And even if the economy goes belly up, we'll survive somehow, just like our grandparents did in the '30s. As for Covid, those folks still wearing masks and taking boosters will never change, so best to leave them to their madness and get on with life. Blessings!

While the German refusal to allow provision of Leopard IIs wasn't entirely unexpected given the strain Olaf's under from his own people, what I did find surprising was that it was accompanied by a "call out." In past instances where Germany has declined to go along with US/NATO foreign adventures, it has invariably (and conveniently) cited limitations under its post-WWII constitution (Basic Law of the FRG) on engaging in/preparations for offensive warfare. Sort of a "we'd love to, old friends, but..." This time, it issued a "put up or shut up." Can't recall Germany ever doing that so openly...the relationship must be REALLY bad these days.

I've previously had some issues re: said senator - but very, very Red Idaho causes Rep. elected officials to be at-ease with such choices. A genuine, real and honest 2 party system promotes healthy competition which would allow pressure on this behavior that doesn't exist now. As usual Mark your Flummox-ation (I'm better at making up words than offering answers to Biden-insanity, I'm afraid) has stimulated fascinating thoughts. (Thanks is in order...I think!)

Mr. Smith noted that "a careful look at the evidence shows... " and your highlighting his position demonstrates he didn't display said 'careful look' support of it. Like most observers, there are many moving-parts (circles within circles as well) that I am thinking reflect a conflict within the Cabal- DOJ, DoS, WH Admin (sans Mr. Biden, I think him hindered with inability of clear thought) and other forces regarding future 'Democrat' functioning. Whether it be looking at 2024 (I suggest on it's own merit, a mess for the dems), Ukraine and the promotion of a WWIII avoiding but continuing US/NATO dominancy program [with the many, many concerns of simply Russia, Russia/China, Russia/China and 2/3rds of the world populace lining up against US financial hegemony- wheels with wheels et al], promotion of the Davos crowds 'one world order' via Global Climate Crisis (which due to lost popularity is being repackaged as the "World Government Summit and the PolyCrisis") which I do think is deeply embedded in democrat intentions-with or without Biden even tho' he's been a staunch supporter and well on and on.

What I'll try to conclude with is a comment on financial issues of the day: while the economy is a disaster there is a lot of new (M2) money sloshing-about in the system which needs to work it's way through before there'll be a real correction and healing. It's a different money world with the interference by our Fed along with Democrat led meddling. I think the same, almost impossible to nail-down path on Biden-gate (?) is due to the 'new and different' influences not understandable because they simply do not make sense. "The Conflict is not defined, how does one predict the outcome?" (I just made that up but was probably said many times before by brighter minds than mine!)

Again, thanks all and keep prayin'! (boy does our country need it!) WRH

But Trudeau is still in office.

With what was done to the truckers, I thought the conservatives would have forced an election.

Seems like conservatives in Canada are like the Washington Generals to the globetrotters.

Unless something is going on at the provincial level.

I’m pretty clueless on Canadian politics.

Expand full comment

LOL about the Washington Generals. Although I don't follow Canadian politics closely either that is my general impression, too.

They just had an election in '21, during which the Conservatives gained ground and the Liberals went from leading a majority government to a minority (coalition) one. It boggles my mind that they keep electing Trudeau but I think there are simply more self-styled "progressive" people in Canada than "conservative" and that makes it hard for the Conservatives to win an election in itself. The Conservatives add to this difficulty by (like the RINOs) being milquetoast and being "progressive light." At least that is my impression. Would love to hear what a commenter from Canada has to say about this.

Expand full comment

I'm not an expert on Canada but to my knowledge the Conservatives suffered a drubbing in elections some decades ago. They were literally wiped off the political map and left with about 3 MPs. Hence the rise of Trucastreau. Canada now is in the same position as UK - neither main party is tolerable. Conservatives in Ottawa did little to fight against Trucastreau's policies on C19 bar a few voices. Hopefuly Trucastreau will be Arderned soon though.

Ding, dong...

I think the COVID tyrants have realized the tide has turned as far as evidence of the horrific effects of the shots becoming public and that this will subsequently lead to general recognition of the horrendous crimes they have committed against humanity (even in NZ).

This is also, I think, part of the Davos dolor this year. They have failed. Now they scurry like the rats they are. Where is Soros? Where is Gates? Schwab whining and pleading with people to have a heart. These vermin will try to plead their cases ("we had good intentions") and get out of harm's way and out of mind before the dam breaks. To think, Ardhern now says that she hopes people will remember her for her "kindness." It would be wonderful to see Trudeau go next. Lots more time with families to come, I think.

My supposition is this- someone noticed these classified documents at the Penn Biden "Think" tank- that someone wasn't particularly congenial with Biden or his staff and threatened go public, or tried extortion. And, it is even possible that someone discovered them who is responsible for the Penn "Think" tank, and was legimately concerned enough about personal liability, that they contacted the DoJ, who then alerted Biden and his lawyers, and everything since has been both a coverup and a series of limited hangouts.

Expand full comment

But why would the MSM run with it? The Dems/DS have had total control of the media up to now. Why the "slip up" over this?

Expand full comment

Because they don't have total control. They control most of the big media operations, but if someone in a position to know outs the info, it can't be bottled up. Suppression would work but for one thing- they went hard after Trump for the exact same "offense". That is what is making it hard to not cover the story- they are forced to try to draw distinctions between the two cases.

Expand full comment

Something had to precipitate the "finding" of these documents back in November. It would help a lot to know what that something was.

Expand full comment

Some suggestions: one, the puppet masters knew about these documents before they raided Maralago. It’s easier to play offense than defense. Second, while Barry was the world’s savior and peacemaker (think Nobel), Joey was trading U.S. sovereignty for personal gain. Joey got Hunter involved, not the other way around. All this info appears in the classified documents. Third, said puppet masters are tired of covering for Hunter, and risk self-incrimination by defending Joey over the documents. They got through the midterms, time to make an adjustment. Fourth, what good is a constitutional republic if following the law is optional?
