Apparently Zelenskiy’s former press secretary, Iulia Mendel, found an apt example to illustrate the meaning of the word—although she later deleted her example:
Call it a tragedy squared. I wonder what Bluto Barr thinks of it?
I suppose it’s fortunate in a way that the US has lots of nukes. Imagine how little respect we’d be getting without them.
Tragedy is having Bluto Barr think it’s ok to betray his oath of office. Tragedy is having a VP who’s to fricken stupid to know that Ukraine is not a member of NATO. Tragedy is having a senile buffoon for President who actually believes that he won the election and yet doesn’t realize that he is the laughing stock of the entire world. But I suppose the greatest tragedy of all is the fact that there appears to be nothing we can do to correct this ever burgeoning disaster.
Tragedy has its roots in the ritualistic slaughter of a male goat, pain that arouses pleasure in the audience. Politically speaking, tragedy would be building false hopes in other nations while their patriotic young men die heroic yet futile deaths.
