A story from Chicago that, I suspect, has been replicated in one form or another across the country: Audit: Widespread fraud, abuse of 'extra pay' in Chicago Public Schools Anyone with much experience working for government—especially Big Government—will sooner or later come to the realization that the point of many to most programs is simply to shovel money out the door: by creating jobs programs or continuing and expanding existing jobs, by enabling what is quaintly referred to as fraud by people who don’t ‘get it.’ Who don’t understand what it’s really all about. Of course these programs are always accompanied by fraud prevention measures, but those are also largely meant to create jobs rather than to actually prevent fraud. The easy way to actually prevent fraud is to not give money away in a wasteful manner, but that would mean canceling many to most of the jobs/programs.
As a current downstate Illinoizan, and former Chicagoan, this kind of gross mismanagement of public resources by big government scoundrels is yet another fine example of our eventual demise as a functional society. What can’t continue, won’t. Eventually the math doesn’t work anymore. Reality can be ignored only so long. In the meantime the looting and destruction of the public coffers will continue.
Everyone tends to think that impossible situations will somehow continue, but they won't. When it all breaks, as it will, things will be very ugly. With the change in King Dollar's status, lots of things will change on the domestic front. Americans tend to think events overseas don't affect. Not true.
Reminds me of the Obama “shovel ready project fiasco”. The city I worked for was chastising employees for not coming up with projects to get on the gravy train with. One suggestion was to build a sidewalk for kids to walk to school on. Only problem, no school on that path, went through an industrial area that no one wanted children traversing. Fortunately a public works director was able to articulate the ridiculousness of the proposal without getting fired. Hopefully the money went to a real project that needed funding………but I doubt it.
When Obama came to Solyndra as it opened to give a booster speech. Someone shoved a mic in front of an Apprentice Electrician kid who'd just pulled his first all nighter to get the lighting job done and he was all starry eyed about the coming blessing by the big "O" I just wonder how that kid feels about it today or if he's cognizant of the dismal failure.
Wasn't it de Toqueville who wrote that Democracy in America would fail as soon as politicians realized they could bribe the people? And then came the income tax.
For years I maintained a small LLC which served as my business identity for consulting services, a vehicle to pay me. I closed the LLC just before COVID.
In the couple weeks prior to Christmas I received at least a dozen calls with multiple different call-back numbers advising that the USG had made available to my LLC "up to $26,000 per employee" who might have been effected in some manner by COVID. This was not money to go to the employee, but money to come to me as the employer.
Typically spam callers do not leave long, detailed voice messages. Not so in this case.

Incredible.
I never followed up.
Another chapter in “The Rise and Fall of the American Republic.”
Here's a start:
Schools closed, but “Safe Passage” workers were still paid $4.3 million in tax dollars this year to man street corners

Don't worry, Rascal. McCarthy's on to it!
