There is the possibility that the Republicans who object to the MAGA ascendancy would elect a Democrat to be House Speaker. After all, these RINOs would lose power either way, but would keep their insider influence should a Democrat be elected.

"Among the unacknowledged demands: Conservatives want a commitment that House leadership will not work to defeat them in party primaries. "

I take this as evidence that conservatives have learned nothing. Such a promise is unenforceable. To quote Frodo, "There's no promise you can make that I can trust." So what do they plan to do? Make McCarthy swear on the Precious? Even a promise that Republicans could call a vote of confidence is meaningless. Most of the GOP contingent in the House supports McCarthy and would likely continue to do so. Put him in as Speaker and he can't, as a practical matter, be removed.

Once again, everyone is focused on DC instead of putting our time and energy into our state and local governments, which is where we the people have the most power. Don't like what the feds are doing? Start putting pressure on your state government to use nullification as a way to rein in the feds.

Just more blue smoke and mirrors, like all of those phony “reality” shows and the continuing realization that there isn’t any “there, there”. I think everyone here feels pretty much the same way, “ seen this movie before and watching it yet again is not going to change the ending”!

Like you Mark, wish I could be a little bit more positive, but after this last Republican capitulation on the Trillion dollar spending bill and then McConnell’s scheduled “in your face” showboating with Slow Joe later this month, it just seems like more false hope.

I am constantly amazed at the politicians that I had believed were true conservatives turning out to be duplicitous traitors of the first order.

So, as someone else has already commented, nobody is going to jail, nobody is going to be perp-walked on the nightly news and certainly nobody is going to be held accountable for the numerous crimes that have been committed against the country. Not with a bang, but with a whimper….

Sad.

I don't trust McCarthy at all, but, as you articulate, "Who else?" I think playing games with "present" votes to gain concessions on a second ballot is too risky. We can be sure that every last Democrat will name Jeffries in the vote. It stinks, but that's where we are.

The only "positive" takeaway from denying McCarthy would be to show other Rinos that there is some pushback - occasionally.

Given my previous comments re: DC I will say this. A radio personality I have listened to for years is all upset over this. It all seems to revolve around getting committees going to investigate the people who have been investigating things. Absolute waste of time. Do people really think anyone in Washington DC will be held accountable for the J6 investigation fiasco or anything else for that matter? Please. I'm rather sick of all the theater to be honest.

It’s a conundrum. We know we’re going to get screwed no matter the outcome of this fight. McCarthy will promise the moon and it is all lies. Just watch. I’d love to be wrong
