Brief Fico Assassination Attempt Update

Zerohedge summarizes from Bloomberg. The real news is the broadening of the investigation:

Slovakia Probing Broader Conspiracy In Assassination Attempt On PM Fico

Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak announced over the weekend of Fico, "He has emerged from the immediate threat to his life, but his condition remains serious and he requires intensive care."

"We can consider his condition stable with a positive prognosis," Kalinak said outside the hospital where the prime minister is expected to remain likely for an extended period of time. "We all feel a bit more relaxed now."

Concerning the shooter's motives, Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok has said in a fresh briefing that "the suspect was angered by the government’s Ukraine policy" and that he may not have been a lone wolf. According to Bloomberg:

On Sunday, authorities said that cooperation with domestic and foreign intelligence services had led to a broadening of the probe, to include a version in which a group - which wasn’t identified - may have been linked to the crime.

According to more details from Estok, "A potential broader assassination plot is supported by the fact that the assailant’s social media communications were erased by another person about two hours after the shooting."

The Interior Minister explained, "we added a version that it wasn’t only a lone-wolf attacker, but that the crime may have been conducted by a certain group of people."

Ordinarily you might suppose that it was the guy’s radical Ukrainian wife who erased his social media communications—she would be the most likely person to have access to the accounts, passwords, etc. Of course, that doesn’t exclude the possibility that she was cooperating with others and manipulating him. She’s been in custody, being questioned, for a while, so the matter of the erasure would certainly be a hot topic during questioning.

That’s what makes the other statement so interesting—it was cooperation with foreign intel agencies, not just the mere fact of the erasure, that led to the broadening of the probe. That’s how I read that. OK, the actual quote includes “domestic” intel agencies, but we suppose that the domestic agencies were all over this from the get go. This is a new development, and so is the reference to cooperation with foreign intel agencies. Next question, Which foreign intel services, and what information were they able to provide to the Slovaks that changed the focus from “lone wolf” to “possible conspiracy”?

I’m not an expert on this stuff. However, my guess is that some information should be retrievable regarding the person who did the erasure, if it was done remotely. Possible location of the person signing in, even clues as to identity?
