Who is Grant Shapps (@grantshapps), the new UK Defense secretary?
Ben Wallace has resigned as secretary of Defense of the UK, and the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Grant Shapps, has been appointed as his successor. Having not heard of the new guy, I thought I’d give him a lookup. Here are some interesting facts I ran into (not hard to find), about Mr Shapps:
He was a 5 O Levels (Ordinary) student, studied business & finance with Higher national diploma.
He was the President of the BBYO (Jewish Youth Zionist movement).
Had an accident in 1989 and went into coma for a week.
He was a photocopy salesman then purchased a bankrupted printing business.
He was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma at 31 and recovered.
He founded a web publishing business which later faced a scandal of fake testimonials.
Google blacklisted 19 of his business websites for violating copyrights rules.
He launched a “20/20 Challenge” that promised customers incomes of $20k in 20 days for a cost of $497 which turned out to be just a toolkit for a Pyramid recruiting scheme for shared earnings.
After entering the parliament, he was suspected of using pseudonyms which he denied.
He attracted controversy under David Cameron for maintaining a 2nd job after entering parliament under a fake name, which he denied, and then admitted it a year later.
He joined Cameron’s Cabinet as party chairman, a role he was eventually demoted from after he was accused of anonymously editing his own Wikipedia entry.
He was appointed as international development minister, but then had to resign after being warned about bullying in the party, a year before a young activist took his own life, which he also denied.
He was opposed to the UK's withdrawal from the European Union prior to the 2016 referendum.
He would have received payment in cryptocurrency tokens with a future value of up to £700,000 from OpenBrix and from the Blockchain parliamentary group he had founded.
