I heard the CEO of Exxon Mobil say that even if they opened the Straight today, it would take 15 months just to get our oil reserves stocked and for the price of gas to come down. He also said there is a serious reality problem: the price of gas should be much higher than it is. He said that we will need to reconcile as well. I've lost count, but I heard today that the count is about 30 times. Nothing Trump says can be believed--by us or by the Iranians. We/Trump broke the JCPOA that Iran was abiding by--IAEA inspectors were confirming that. The U.S. attacked Iran while negotiations were underway. We murdered their leaders with whom we would be negotiating. We have violated the terms of the MOU. Isn't ironic (Iranic?) that while our talking heads keep vacuously chanting the mantra "Iran can't have a nuclear weapon" Iran agreed with that. They have said repeatedly that they did not want a nuclear weapon. It makes one wonder what the actual endgame of the U.S./Israel is."
A lot of these [retired generals] are getting put out there and they're getting put on Fox to say these things over and over again. Something I learned some time ago from Syrian friends who attend my Greek Orthodox church. They are very faithful. The wife and Mother is from Syria and she is born of Syrian immigrants who migrated here in the 50's. They have family remaining in Syria and they grieve over the slaughter that is taking place and the murder of many Syrian and Middle Eastern Christians in general by Israeli backed ISIS and Israel settlers and the destruction of ancient Churches. We had a lengthy discussion on several occasions after Liturgy about the conflicts in Syria going back to the Bush admin. She said most Christian Syrians were Assad backers as he was a protector of Christians, and she said he was misrepresented in America and the disinformation generally came from Israel and American Jews. We were totally misled by our government and their desire to remove him was driven by Israeli Lebensraum and the greater Israel project.

I don't believe China has ever intended to invade Taiwan as the means of taking it over. It is not practical or efficient for them to do so, and not in their best interests. I do believe that they have always sought to accomplish a de facto takeover of Taiwan through economic leverage and political and economic agreements. I think those will occur naturally as Taiwan sees its best interests served by allying with China rather than the U.S. (as the U.S.'s progressively weakens financially and can no longer defend Taiwan militarily.
I disagree with that post somewhat, I think the theory that offence is dead is based on the perception that Ukraine's drone warfare has stalled Russia's progress in terms of territory taken. I don't quite get where the Iran angle is coming from - Iran isn't trying to invade anything - but essentially, it's a misconception that wars can only be won by invading countries.
That is patently false. Wars are primarily won by destroying the opponent's will to fight. This _can_ be achieved by taking their territory, but those are not the only means.
Ukraine only keeps fighting because Russia doesn't touch their supply lines, which are inside NATO countries. Without those, the war would have been won years ago. Instead, it's effectively WW1 larping, where Russia pretends that their weapons can't reach the enemy's strategic rear, which automatically forces an attritional war at the line of contact.
Of course, eventually, just like in WW1, the attrition of men, materiel and supply will force a capitulation.
Could China invade Taiwan? It's easier today than before the Ukraine, and especially Iran war, having proven that area denial via drone and missile forces easily keeps the US Navy at bay. Simply cut off Taiwan, land some strategic strikes, ready some troops for a ground operation and let them stew for a few weeks without imports. Taiwan, realising that the US isn't going to trade Los Angeles for Taipei, has no choice but to surrender. Chinese troops march in, overseeing the orderly transition of governance, and then declare Taiwan a special government zone on the Hong Kong model. Done, and there's nothing the US could do about it.
China simply prefers a peaceful reunification, and is prepared to wait for a few decades if necessary, and would need to be pushed into those measures by US triggering.

Wow! What a woman. Awhile ago on a long bus ride from New York a young Lebanese woman carrying her wedding dress was a fellow passenger. Several on the bus got to talking about controversial topics not permitted in polite parties. The Lebanese woman was articulate, forceful, NEVER backed down. I'm told not to form opinions about whole peoples based on one person, but damn, she was tough, and smart.

Basically due to changes in military technology invading countries is no longer possible, and Iran and Russia are trying to get out of the trap they are in. And China can no longer successfully invade Taiwan.
I don't believe China has ever intended to invade Taiwan as the means of taking it over. It is not practical or efficient for them to do so, and not in their best interests. I do believe that they have always sought to accomplish a de facto takeover of Taiwan through economic leverage and political and economic agreements. I think those will occur naturally as Taiwan sees its best interests served by allying with China rather than the U.S. (as the U.S.'s progressively weakens financially and can no longer defend Taiwan militarily.
I disagree with that post somewhat, I think the theory that offence is dead is based on the perception that Ukraine's drone warfare has stalled Russia's progress in terms of territory taken. I don't quite get where the Iran angle is coming from - Iran isn't trying to invade anything - but essentially, it's a misconception that wars can only be won by invading countries.
That is patently false. Wars are primarily won by destroying the opponent's will to fight. This _can_ be achieved by taking their territory, but those are not the only means.
Ukraine only keeps fighting because Russia doesn't touch their supply lines, which are inside NATO countries. Without those, the war would have been won years ago. Instead, it's effectively WW1 larping, where Russia pretends that their weapons can't reach the enemy's strategic rear, which automatically forces an attritional war at the line of contact.
Of course, eventually, just like in WW1, the attrition of men, materiel and supply will force a capitulation.
Could China invade Taiwan? It's easier today than before the Ukraine, and especially Iran war, having proven that area denial via drone and missile forces easily keeps the US Navy at bay. Simply cut off Taiwan, land some strategic strikes, ready some troops for a ground operation and let them stew for a few weeks without imports. Taiwan, realising that the US isn't going to trade Los Angeles for Taipei, has no choice but to surrender. Chinese troops march in, overseeing the orderly transition of governance, and then declare Taiwan a special government zone on the Hong Kong model. Done, and there's nothing the US could do about it.
China simply prefers a peaceful reunification, and is prepared to wait for a few decades if necessary, and would need to be pushed into those measures by US triggering.
Drones are the new paradigm on the ground and in the air, but they don't win wars. Logistics, and the resulting destruction of the will and capability to fight, do.

On top of that invading Taiwan is a physically daunting proposition given its geography. The Chinese could certainly set up a blockade that might cause Taiwan to "sue for peace" but I don't see Chinese troops on the island in any armed conflict.
My point is they don't need to do an Iwo Jima. Damages the infrastructure, gets the population mad at you, requires permanent garrisons, causes losses...

As the assimilation of hong king showed, China has an ability to take over an unhappy population. Taiwan has strict gun control, and a military patterned after the U.S. that focuses on shiny objects, and has issues with its logistics, reserves, and training last I looked a couple of years ago. The building of diesel subs was a good move, but is going slowly. The country seems not enough drone and missile. China flys around the island and does live firing exercises whenever they feel like it. Taiwan is trying to move its economy from dependence on China to other Asian countries.
