It’s hard to be optimistic about where America is heading—not on the domestic front and not abroad. Looming ahead is a fiscal crisis that lead to a true domestic and constitutional crisis. Debt is out of control, and the political classes—our rulers—seem determined to continue digging the debt hole deeper. Opening the borders, destroying most semblances of representative elections, dividing the subject population to keep them from turning on the ruling class—no one in a position of influence appears to be serious. Meanwhile, much of the world is fleeing from the dollar.
Trump? Right now he appears to be intent on destroying all hope that he could present much of an alternative. On the positive side, Trump clearly recognizes that the American Empire is in a hole, but his bullet list suggests that he’ll keep digging:
NEW:
Trump's plan for Ukraine if he becomes president:
The United States will seek a ceasefire in Ukraine and the start of negotiations.
If Ukraine negotiates, the United States will continue to supply weapons and strengthen its defense.
Ukraine's membership in NATO will be postponed.
Russia may be offered easing of sanctions.
Ukraine will be allowed to insist on the return of all territories.
It will be possible to completely lift sanctions from Russia only after it signs a peace agreement that is completely acceptable to Ukraine.

Obviously these ideas are a complete non-starter for Russia. Why would Russia enter negotiations—yes, it does take two to negotiate, and presumably the author of The Art of the Deal knows that—on such absurd preconditions? Perhaps Trump, understanding that, is counting on Russia to obviate that difficulty for him—by crushing Ukraine before Trump is inaugurated. That strikes me as only one dimensional chess, which likely won’t be anywhere near good enough when dealing with past masters of the Great Game like Russia and Iran—with China backing them up.
My problem is that, in the current crisis, I’d like to see more of a take-the-bull-by-the-horns approach. Trump’s statements about the Middle East have been provided little reason for optimism that we can avoid being dragged into a serious crisis. John Mearsheimer, for one, who for the first year or so of the war on Russia failed to see how strong Russia would turn out to be, but now sees NATO collapsing while the Middle East becomes an even worse danger spot for the US. Think about that—worse than the collapse of NATO. Do we have any reason to expect a more constructive policy with regard to China? Who’s holding their breath waiting for mass deportations of illegals? For bring the debt crisis under any semblance of control?
In fairness, as I’ve said many times, any president’s hands are largely tied. A president can do anything he wants—as long as it’s the same thing that the Interagency, Deep State, and Uniparty want. Since the president no longer has any control over the budget, every president ends up turning to foreign policy. But his hands are tied there, too. As Trump found out. But what this really means is that our constitutional order has become largely dysfunctional, with most power players opposed to reform. That’s a recipe for a crackup.
On a completely related issue, for anyone who has any doubts that the war on Russia and the Israeli drive for supremacy in the Middle East, consider this:
We’re talking Neocon grand strategy here. Trump will have a free hand? Over the dead bodies that live within that still undrained swamp.
Within the space of a fortnight, Trump gave a decisive push to the Ukraine/Israel spending bill, rescued a treasonous uniparty speaker from oblivion, lent his support to the renewal and reinforcement of FISA, the very tool that began his political persecution, and waxed lyrical about a new building for the FBI. He's done.
Seems to me that the political classes are not the rulers. They are the managers who are working for the rulers.
As for Trump, whether or not he was ever anything more than controlled opposition... either as willing participant or as a dupe... it seems that he is now owned by those aforementioned rulers, that the purpose of all those lawsuits was to show him how easy it would be for the "deep state" to destroy him. Perhaps we are now seeing those lawsuits fall apart because he has agreed to play nice.
