Like others, back in 2024 I favored the idea of using tariffs to encourage the growth and/or return of manufacturing to the United States, to restore a more balanced economic model after the disaster of hyper financialization since Reagan.
The tariffs have to be repaid and the first claims already have been. The problem is that the money has been spent, so Trumps printers are going to have to print quite a lot more extra green little pieces of paper.
But on the upside for Trump he did manage to strike some deals..that is, some for his Trump "family" members own account. I am going with "MATA" or "Money Access, Trump Again"
Do not expect congressmen and congresswomen to do the job required of them. The Legislative Branch is a monopoly-type game in which the players (senators and representatives) pass Go! and collect $200,000,000; most of which comes from AIPAC and other dubious lobbies. There are only 'get out of jail free' cards in the community chest.
If I recall correctly, tariffs and excise taxes were a government's main source of revenue before income taxes were introduced (and weren't all income taxes 'temporary" to help fund this or that war?).
I think Trump did mention, at one point, that if the tariffs worked, income taxes would be no more. Sadly, like most things he says, this was yet another lie.

After Trump punched our ticket for the tariff roller coaster ride, and then SCOTUS struck down the tariffs, the Trump admininstration began an investigation into the unfair trading practices of 16 partners: Mexico, the EU, Norway, Switzerland, India, China, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and Singapore. I admit I was distracted by the Iran War.
The objective of these investigations was to try to get tariffs back to where they were before the SCOTUS decision. As of July, we are down to 10 partners under scrutiny.
But, as the gentleman in the video says,
"If you're a business owner, it's impossible to know what your tariff rates are going to be" going forward during such investigations, which does not encourage "re-shoring", or even continuing to "friend-shore" manufacturing by, e.g. locating the final assembly of Chinese parts in Vietnam and shipping from Vietnam into the US.
Without predictability, the type of rational businessmen who run manufacturing companies cannot "shore" anything anywhere, let alone begin to help re-industrialize the US.

THIS IS the issue with the executive branch having been ceded too much power by the lazy legislative branch. When the cautious judiciary finally decides to do an (anchor) baby step, they either make a totally wrong move or nibble around the edges of problems.
Inconsistent governance is no way to run a country, unless, the purpose is to cause disruption, a certain few folks thrive in such an environment.
Lazy legislative branch, also I think quite often incompetent and unqualified. Too many citizens have never been taught Western Civilization or any substitute for it, and so they do not know what a legislator does and they do not know how to judge candidates' probable competencies. A large portion of the electorate has been taught, in school, that selecting one's legislators based on identity and professed ideology will somehow effect legislation that's in one's interest, through a sort of transmutation that involves "the marketplace of ideas" and a "dialectic" which is created by a widespread attitude of resistance to proposals that don't directly favor the interest group, with the specifics of which proposals are resisted, varying by identity+ideology in the person of whichever legislator we focus attention on. This is true for almost all factions: the Religious Right, the Soppy-Warhawk Middle, the NeoCommunist-Revolutionary Left.
The Left has no intention of pushing forward to actually submit the country-wide syndicate to an all-encompassing State; they all intend, consciously or not, to stop with excluding the groups they feel are oppressive from the "democracy" that they envision, but **the same is true of the Theocratic Right**, they simply don't describe themselves as following Lenin, even though their desires would effect exactly the same political outcome.
The "Western Civilization" course was a full year of history that covered western civ from the traditional position of yay, us. It was excised from all universities starting in I think the 80s. It wasn't fully gone until c 2000. But it's probably mostly Tier 2 or 3 schools that kept it for longer, so the social capital of the graduates isn't that high. Besides, the culture has entirely skipped thinking of Gen X as being welcome on the Board, and power is being handed from the Boomers, who drove the excision of that core foundation, to the Millennials, whose educations did not include it.
No one likes to write doom and gloom. However, one has to be blind, not to see all the elderly people working in supermarkets and similar jobs. If somebody would've told me this when I was younger, I would've thought he/she had some impaired cognitive reasoning ability.
Moreover, if you ride down town you see just pool souls ambulating on the streets. Five days a week I walk for about an hour in a beautiful tree-filled city park. This week we saw a van pull up. A woman and her man, pulling little wagons raced towards the van. they were given water and clothing.
To make this short, at the YMCA a van pulled up next to us. A guy, about 75, stepped out and asked if it was possible to help him. Having studied Behavioral Paradigms and looking at his body language and attire, one couldn't help but feel sorry for him. Obviously he was given some green bread.
If we step out beyond our average John and Jane Doe, we see big conglomerates buying up mid-size farms. The little guy farmer is traveling the way of the Whopping Crane. the Eastern Uncle Joe (Stalin) and his Red "hat" overseers created the Kohoz (big farms)
What has the Clinton co-presidency, the Big 'O,' Uncle Joe, the 'Don' and con-gress done to the American Dream, in this new land of lawfare? My beloved Dziadek (grandfather) must be crying in his grave.
I suspect that the stupid party's majority will end after the election. Then the evil party will take over and resume their particular kind of madness. What would be nice is if both wings of the District of Columbia Uniparty went the way of the Whigs.
